Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yeah, this one I've recently finished repaired snapped the cam belt, and the injector pump belt wasn't too far behind. Was badly cracked on both sides, and was starting to shed a few teeth.

Got a version of Vag-Com working & it says timing is around 1 degree BTDC. Less at revs. Is that sufficient to warrant doing the timing?

To check the timing you need to go to the timing graph.
Very roughly, go to 01 Engine.
        Measuring Blocks 08
        Group 000
        Click Go
Switch to basic settings [TDI Timing will appear]
        Click on TDI Timing
A graph should now appear telling you whether the timing is too far advanced, or retarded or spot on.
Coolant temp must be 85C or above to show timing. This can take a while at this time of the year to bring
back to temp after any adjustment. Raise revs above idling to around 2000 revs.
To read temp, move to 02 & click GO. Coolant temp. will appear on RHS.
Before you can go into timing graph again, you need to go back to page where VIN appears [01-Engine]
Let us know how you get on.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
