  • Plasti-Dipped Badges

    Hey all,

Quick question has anyone used Plasti-Dip to change the colour of their badges? Or anything else on their car? Want to change mine to Matte Black and a pro is if I don't like the look I can just peel it off.

Has anyone used any other products or know what works best?

    Cheers, Kiz.

I've used plastidip a couple times on badges and grille. As long as you apply it correctly it works great and as you mentioned if you dont like it, just peel it off. However the biggest down fall of plastidip is the tacky/sticky finish. I wouldnt use it for any panels

In bigger sections (i.e. panels) the darker colours work far better than the bright ones. I've seen a couple of very good matte black plastidip finishes on cars, but any of the other colours turn out pretty roughly.

That patchy looking finish on the Polo required 11.5L of Plastidip sprayed with a professional gun. As something fun to do for a race meet it worked out well, but I wouldn't be at all happy with the outcome if I'd chosen to Plastidip instead of vinyl wrapping for a longer-term colour change.

On the plus side it does peel off amazingly easily, as long as you've put a heap of Plastidip down. If you get overspray on another area of the car it's much harder to remove than if you coat a thick layer on the surrounding area and peel off.

If you're doing badges etc without taking them off the car, rather than carefully masking around the badge as you'd do if you were using normal paint, mask off a larger area around the badge instead. For the Polo above, if you wanted to Plastidip the rear VW badge for example I'd mask off the boot leaving a rough square cut-out with about 4-5 cm of panel exposed on either side of the badge.

Spray the whole exposed area (badge and surrounding panel) until you've got a thick finish on everything. Wait for it to dry, then carefully peel away from the panels until you're left with just the Plastidip on the badge.

I haven't done it (yet) but I was told to mask off a square around the logo. spray on the cover you want in layers. And then use a tooth pick to pick out the Plastidip on the paint only leaving the cover on the badge.
        Will be trying mine soon.

It's quite easy to do it, your badges will pop off very easily.

So i got the Plasti-Dip but I can't seem to get the badge off the front (havn't tried the rear yet). Anyone got any tips? I have a '07 T5 Transporter. Cheers
