  • New t5 crew van 128 vs Vito 120 vs hyundai

Ordered a lwb 128 crewvan with extras waited 4 months the dealer rang and told it was in. I then reduced the priced on my vehicle by 2k to sell and it sold straight away, went to pick up my new transporter and walked in the showroom and here is SWB and now they tell me i have to wait another 4months for a lwb. So this is why i need to know if the vito is as comparable in quality and resale value as there is one of these in the country ready to go with the v6 tdi 150 kw also hyundai release there new van tonight called the iload with the same horspower rating as the 128 vw the best pictures i can find are on the new zealand sight www.hyundai.co.nz and it is called a h-1 over there. The dealers will have specs tomorrow

Did you have an unusual spec ? There are lots of T5s ordered in by dealers that haven't been pre-sold, so your dealer should be able to pull a few strings and get one of them for you unless you wanted something quite different to the usual. It is the dealer's fault for not checking the build spec against the order spec, so they should be trying to help you out, not just make you start the order process again from scratch.

You do realize you are on a VW forum asking about non-VWs, so most people here are a bit biased towards T5s

I know several of people with 4 cyl diesel Vitos (private use, not commercial) and they all seem pretty happy with them. If you need a van now and didn't want to wait for another factory build I'd certainly go for a test drive and see if you liked it or not. I'd expect the the V6 diesel to go pretty well.

As far as the Hyundai H-1 van goes I haven't heard anything at all about them (good or bad), as they are obviously quite new to Australia. Some new model Hyundais are getting good reports (eg I30) and are much better regarded than some of the old models. I tend to not buy a brand new model until it has been on the market for at least 2 or 3 years, in the hope I can avoid any "lemons" and give the manufacturer a chance to discover and rectify any common design or build problems (eg T5 steering clonks, leaking water pumps, sticky vanes on turbos, leaking sliding windows etc).

I do have to say that while it is a wonderful van to drive, my (purchased new) T5 has not turned out to be as reliable a van as I hoped (I've had 2 electrical problems and 2 engine faults in only 1 year of ownership, doing 17,000Km of easy highway cruising). I know these forums tend to attract people who have had problems, but I've read enough reports on various web forums to know that mine is not an isolated instance.

I would suggest that T5s are probably not for people who absolutely must have 100% reliability in their van. Mind you, I've read plenty about Vito vans with problems too.

I guess you will have to do your own research and come to your own decisions. Please let us know what you end up with and what you think of it.

Yep, they screw up, they should fix it, or at least give u a loaner til they sort it out

When i bought mine, it was on the shop floor (monday am), exact spec i wanted, paid deposit only to find out an hour later that someone had already sold it and that i could'nt pick it up thursday as planned (i had already sold my car/dropped the price as i knew i could pick up new car straight away). i was told i could get different colour on thursday but the spec i wanted there were none available. i didnt even have to hassle them, i just told them i knew the spec i wanted and that was it, and lo and behold they found me one up in port macquarie and had it transported back to melbourne where i picked it up on friday, only a day late. If they cant help u then just go to another dealer and see what is available, there may be something close enough to the spec u want in stock somewhere that u can have.

iload will give everyone a run for the money including the King Toyota Hiace.

I saw iload at last years Sydney Motor Show, the thing with the Koreans is they hire all VW people so there is some VW in most latter Hyundais.

For instance Peter Scheyer former designer from VW is now at Hyundai/Kia as you can see with the i30.

Will be interesting to see how they sell...........

As for the Mercs good quality vans but I personally hate the smooth look and the tail lights if broken cost $800 or something stupid (I gues most Euro vans have there costs.)

T5 all the way, good solid dependable and they never date

Before ordering my T5 I looked at the Vito as well and came to the conclusion it was a bit like the Holden ute vs Falcon ute. The Holden had more style but the Falcon would do the harder work. I was about to order the T5 when I read an ad for the V6 Vito and waited until a test drive, it took 2 weeks before one became available. Keeping it brief, the Vito was going to cost more, had one less gear, A5 vs A6 and didn't seem to have the outright solidity of the T5. The T5 just felt like it would carry heavier loads better. The V6 Vito went bloody quick (I was coming from a petrol/lpg t4 2.5 M5), however the slightly higher rear opening of the T5 made forklift loading easier and 20,000km later (now) I love the T5 even more. Funnily enought last week I was in the loading bay of a CBD building and the driver of the van next to mine was obvioulsy waiting for me to come back...asked me what I thought of the T5, looked through it and said he was going to a VW dealer to get a trade-in valuation as he was sick of the time the dealer was spending repairing things...on his current model Vito.
