  • T4 Ignition Switch

I have a 1998 T4 Double cab that appears to lately have developed an issue with the ignition switch.

Sometimes when I turn the key it starts first shot.

Other times it appear to hesitate for a sec or 4 before it starts.

Lately it can take up to 2 or 3 attempts before it fires up.

When one turns the key the dash lites come on but the prob is in getting it to start first time.

    Suggestions anybody??

    Thanks.................

    Re ignition switch

Yes i had mine give up only recently. But actually they are not expensive or hard to replace. What gives up is the lower barrel not the key/switch as such.
I think from memory the lower barrel is about $30-35 genuine.
After reading the manual on how to replace i thought i would have to drill the ignition switch and looked to be a prick of a job, but this was not to be.
After removing steering wheel and associated plastic covers, you simply unplug the connection from the loom and with a torch you should be able to see a tiny phillips head screw going into the bottom of the ignition lower barrel. You need to remove this slowly and patiently. I found that i had to use a screw driver that was right angle shape to undo the screw. It was a old $2 screw driver that you would only use for something like this.
Whole job took about an hour and no more start hassles
    Good luck

I stumbled across this instruction while poking around on the Bentley forums, may be of some help.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
