  • Water pump gone, non vw mechanic concerned about head/gasket

    Hi all,
Had an over the phone diagnosis that I agreed with, water suddenly being used, froth under filler cap, therefore water pump gone, it is a T5 2006 model with 165 km after all.
Now my mechanic, family friend and not vw man thinks it could be head gasket as there is water all through the head area( found after removing rocker cover).
I still think water pump as I know the inherent problems with them on the AXE engine.

    Any thoughts or opinions

Just remove the cover over the area where the w/pump is and try to rock the w/pump gear, if you can feel it rocking, then there is no doubt that the w/pump is leaking coolant onto the engine oil, straight into the sump where it gets mixed up and then naturaly the water content from the coolant will vaporate and seat at the highest point trying to escape, so yes there will be a lot of milky looking deposit on when you remove the rocker cover. You should also be able to see the coolant leak form the drain hose at the back of the engine.

If the w/pump feels OK, then it could also be the oil cooler. I wouldn't be removing then cylinder head without checking the two first.

    Good luck!
