Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • First service - does this sound ok?

I rang my local VW dealer and was quoted $460 for the 15K (first) service on the Multivan.

Is that about right, or should I be looking elsewhere?

As an aside, I wasn't overly impressed by the level of product knowledge off the bat. After telling them it was an Edition 25, I was asked - is that a petrol or diesel, and when I said diesel - is that the 1.9 or 2.5 litre engine...

    Hi,

As plenty of people will probably tell you, dealers aren't necessarily the best places for servicing. There's many independent VW workshops that can do the same work for less (and possibly better too). I don't know Sydney or its mechanics, but I'm sure others here can help in that regard.

    Cheers.

That's about right for a Sydney based Volkswagen dealer....but I'd not be paying that since all they'll do is tick a checklist without looking at the van and swap your engine oil (and overfilling it) and oil filter.

      Get an itemised quote....

          wow. . .

You've obviously had a bad time with dealers.

          $460 seems a bit high

Most dealers around around $420 for a 15K interval service on a passenger vehicle, so $460 isn't too bad when you factor in the extra couple of litres of oil.

Sounds right to me........Get used to it, they don't get any cheaper after that service.
The 60,0000km service is a big one. (if you have DSG).

Not so much a bad time as merely a string of underwhelming experiences spread across three States and a decade.

Regardless, the original Sydney dealer managed to charge more for the basic service at 15,000 in 2002 than the country Victoria dealer did for the same basic service at 150,000...some six or seven years later. Still have the reciepts. Both used the same parts/oil and time too. Laughed like a drain, I did.
