  • Rear Door Opening from inside

    Hi Guys,

A mate of mine has an ex ambulance from NSW and it has a pull button on his rear door window ledge that when lifted will allow the door to be opened from inside the van. Is this an option added by VW or is it something added by the ambulance service when fitting out the van? It looked a bit home made but it worked well. Has anyone made a lift button for their van and what did you make it from and where did it attach? Hope someone can help as it would be something I'd like to be able to fit to mine.

    cheers Gary

Chances are this was specified by the ambulance service.

My Hiace SBV had an internal release, but my Caddy does not,and VW says it is "standard for this type of vehicle". I got myself caught in the backof my Caddy when I thought I'd lower the tailgate to fit a reversing lens. After it clicked, I realised there was no internal release. Good thing I did not have a cargo barrier.

If you can get the trim panel off the door, it would be relatively simple to rig up an emergency release that worked off the standard release mechanism. Then again, this is something that VW should be fitting as standard. I mean, car boots have an emergency release. You would think that if offering the vehicle as an ambulance VW would at least provide a professional release mechanism. After all, an ambulance does have people in the back.

There's a circular cover that has a lever behind it. You should be able to rig something up off that, or even off the actuating rod for the outer handle.

Failing that, you might be able to get in touch with the company in Sydney that fits them out.

Thank you gentlemen for your advice. Seems like its take the door panel off time and go exploring. Had it off once before when I put sound proofing in behind it. Should have looked at it then! By the sound of it it should be relatively simple to rig something up with parts from a wrecking yard. The ambulance conversion was a simple affair by the look of it too. Thanks again. cheers Gary
