Is possible that broken gearbox can lock engine ? Transporter T5 2005, 1.9 manual

If the clutch is still working it should disconnect the engine from the gearbox, so you should be able to prove which unit is locked. From the many threads that I have read, the flywheel falling apart and locking in the bellhousing is a major problem.
