  • Gates Couplings, when to replace

My 2006 2.5TDI 96kw has done 135,000km now on the original gates couplings.

Are there any statistics on how far they go before failing, also what about the freewheeling hubs, I have already had one siezed at 70,000km on the air-con shaft.

Any feedback from people who work on these regarding potential failure time.

    Thanks
    Brian

As I recall, on my 2007 128Kw, it is scheduled for replacement at 180K (Van's not with me ATM so I can't check). Earlier van's might have a sooner schedule though. It should be specified in your service schedule somewhere.

At 150,000km with the freewheeling hub as per my 2005 T5 (made 08/2004)

Were they worn out at this distance or were they still in good order and just changed for peace of mind.

Mine are still on the engine. I presume that they could last longer than 150,000km, it all depends where you drive, since thay're not sealed in and the dust and sand will affect them.

I will replace mine at 150,000km because they will be more than 10years old by then.

My Nov-2004 build T5 96kw Tdi, air-con coupling failed at 55,000k and water pump seals at 63,000k so don't expect miracle's

Bit unusual for the couplings to fail that soon. But you got probably OK milaege for the water pump failure.

Just got my 150,000km service and asked for the gates couplings to be checked as i could hear a small rattle sound as the engine slowed just above idle, so they rang and said they are both worn (flogged out was the words they used), so I said to replace both. They also checked the freewheeling hubs and they were both ok. I now cannot hear the rattle sound, so next time I will know how worn they are getting by this sound.

EDIT: I did see one of them, and I would guess that even though they were worn inside, they would have run for a while yet without stripping the splines or breaking. It appeared to me that the originals might be used up to about 200,000km, but best to change them at 150,000 as recommended.

Pretty sure the schedule says 150,000klms for the couplings. I would do the free-wheeling hubs at the same time. You might as well, while you've got it all apart.

One of my freewheels was replaced at 75,000, and they said they were ok now so I have left them. They also said that they can easily check them so I ask for a check at each service.

                        On 2008 DPF 128kw model, 180,000Ks....in theory.

My 05 4motion just clicked over 230000 km mainly on poor roads with original Gates couplings. They still feel fairly good and I can,t see any major problem if they did fail. Not like an exploding flywheel or something similar. Correct me if i,m wrong. Cheers

You alternator will stop charging if the top one goes.

True enough UmaiNaa but luckily I have double battery setup which hopefully will get me home. Thats the theory anyway. I will probably do the Gates and drives in next year or so. Cheers
