Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi everyone, I am new, excited and curious...

I have just ordered a 2011 MY12 Multivan Comfortline today. Hopefully arriving mid next month.

Dark Wood in color, with the multifunctional table, windows tint and fog lights...

I was also told by the dealers that theres Multifunctional steering wheel and ipod cable coming as standard feature on the MY12 model.

So now, I have a couple of questions...

    1. I am really really really keen on changing the wheels as soon as the van can be collected. However I am confused with the load rating theory in the other threads. Seems like every different size have different load rating requirements. So whats the minimum load rating that I need for 18" or 20"?

    2. Would the stock 16" alloys with brand new tyres or 99% new tyres be worth anything?

    3. I have heard that theres a minor trim upgrade in the MY12 models, can anyone point out on what it is?

    4. What would be a good place to shop for aftermarket exterior and interior cosmatic upgrades?

Thanks everyone and nice to meet you all.

    Hi Jonathan & welcome,

As a guide, I paid $1225 for 4 new Tangis 16 x6 alloys, (new stock, on special) from Bayford's last year (I think RRP was about $1600). That's without tyres, but you'd probably pay less if ordered with the van. It may depend on which style wheel as well, as I didn't much like the 16" alloys that were on offer when I bought the van (2007), as they looked very vulnerable to curb damage. You may find a market for them, as some people don't like the larger wheels/ lower profile tyres, for both comfort and wear reasons. I got 75K+ out of my original 16" Michelins, but most people with the larger wheels tend to talk about 40K or so, and of course they are more expensive to replace.I did look at some 18's, but the wheel/tyre combination was going to cost about double ($4000 compared to $2200), and also, as I do a bit of off-road work, I thought the 16" size would be more practical.

PS. A friend of mine is thinking about a multivan, but wondering what the bed/sleeping arrangements are like if used for that. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

      Thanks Brian!

I would be extremely happy if my set of wheels and tyres could go for about 1000. So good news it is.

On the other hand, my multivan didn't option for the goodnight package that includes all the blinds and an extra stand at the back that makes up the whole "bed". However I did saw one at the dealership with all those fitted. Have to say it is pretty impressive. Basically the whole back roll area turned into a bed. Pretty nice however i am not really a camping type of person so we didn't bother with that option so yea

You should get anywhere from $600-$1000 for your new wheels and tyres. Have a look on ebay to get an idea.

My understanding of load rating is that its not effected by wheel size. Load rating is the weight the wheel can take. Basically how strong it is. There will be a plaque on the drivers side door pillar with some tyre specs. It will have a minimum of 102 or 103 for load for wheels and tyres and speed rating for the tyre.
