Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Problems getting a T5 multivan roadworthied in Vic

    Hi all,

    Noob here!

According to the FAQ sticky here, the minimum brake disc thickness for the multivan is 25.5mm. We took our new (to us, its an 07) multivan in to get roadworthied last week and it failed - the brake pads/discs need replacing amongst a few other things. Ordered the parts to do a DIY job and save $$$ on the enourmous quote they gave us, got the wheels off and there's hardly any wear at all. They're not near the 25.5mm minimum listed here. Theres a slight lip on either side of the disc but it just looks like normal wear.

Called the guy who did the inspection and he says that the minimum thickness for the discs to be roadworthy is 28.5mm. Any idea if we're getting taken for a ride or if he's right? Vicroads says that the minimum VW specs are the RW standard so any idea where I can find them at short notice?

    Cheers

Possibly is stamped on the disk somewhere.

WHat engine do you have in your Multivan?
The 128wk vans had 17" wheels and larger brakes. The vans with 16" wheels had smaller brakes fitted, hence there will be 2 different thicknesses listed.

Take someone with a new Multi that lives near you to take there van to the tester and show him.

People who do things like this for a job dont like being told there wrong without proof.

Just noticed this as well.... as IN2VWS has pointed out. 16 or 17 inch wheels?

            Minimum thickness: 25.5mm (17"wheels /2E4/ = 28.5mm)

Thanks for the fast and helpful replies.

Can't find anything stamped on the new rotors and I'm 7 months pregnant so not going to jack it up and take the wheels off to check the ones on there now!

But we've got the 16inch wheels. And they must have known that because they quoted for 2 new tyres as well. So it looks like they got mixed up when doing the inspection.

We've got it booked in somewhere else next week so once if it gets the all clear from them without needing them replaced then we'll go for round 2 at trying to get a refund on the inspection fee.

Oh, and would the lip make it unroadworthy if the thickness of the rest of the disc was within spec? That was his second justification for the new ones being needed.

How many km's have you done?
Even with the up to 1mm lip, the discs will be still above the scrap limit (MIN.TH.).

page 137 of the 2007 DBA catalogue says the minimum thickness is 25.5mm on a 29.5mm new disc. I'd attach the page but this forum doesn't have that capacity. PM me your email & I'll send you a pdf of the page.

If you go to the online catalogue at dba.com.au you can plug in your model specs.
It clearly states that the 16" rims are 308mm diameter x 29.5mm thickness. The 17" rims have 333mm diameter x 33mm thick. Just measure the diameter & you will know what thickness they should be.

The lip isn't an issue unless you are fitting new pads. The old pads would be worn into the profile of the lip. Sometimes the lip can start touching the steel part of the pads - but if the disc is at minimum (2mm lip) then the pads would only have 2mm of material left as well - so it would all be shagged anyway.

Just wanted to pop back in and say thanks again!

Got the RWC today and brakes were well within spec as we thought so I'm off to email the original mechanic now before I start hitting truelocal etc with some reviews
