  • MY09 T5 Caravelle won't start!

While driving along the Calder at 110km/h in our 15 month old Caravelle with 11,500kms on the clock, it started shaking and then I noticed the engine had cut out.
I managed to pull up off the highway, turned everything off and tried to restart it.
It took ~20 seconds of turning it over to get it going, and when it did it was idling very roughly and I couldn't increase the revs when I touched the accelerator, then it would cut out again soon after.
I tried starting it several times and I ended up with the warning message 'STOP. Low oil pressure' (or something along those lines) and it wouldn't start at all! Yes, there is oil in it.

So I rang VW assist who got someone (RACV) out to us and they towed it locally until Monday when they will take it to the closest VW dealer which is in Bendigo (We're from the Northern suburbs of Melbourne).

This was a 3 hour 'ordeal' yesterday afternoon with 4 young kids in the car!
Luckily we were only 20 minutes from my parents who live in Castlemaine which is where we were going.

In addition, the car has been difficult to start for the past week or two, and by difficult I mean it wouldn't always go first turn of the key, sometimes taking 5-10 seconds of turning it over to get it started (something that I was going to have checked soon too).

So, does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Hmmm...well it is going again after having a tinker with the fuel filter.
There was no fuel being pumped from the fuel tank yesterday (out of the fuel filter inlet pipe), and now there is!

Now I'm not sure if I can trust the car to continue running, and if I take it to VW now that it seems to be running they'll just say 'no fault found', when it could potentially happen at any moment again!

It's not uncommon for the in-tank fuel pump to crap it's pants.

Do you mean that until you physically played with the fuel filter the car still wouldn't start? Can you hear the fuel pumps running? Did you fill up recently?

          Well, technically speaking, yes.

We removed the fuel filter for inspection, and to check for fuel pump output quantity. From there, it was obvious that the in-tank pump had failed.

Sorry, I was actually asking Blaast as he mentioned "having a tinker".

Unplugged the fuel inlet to the fuel filter and there was nothing coming out, but now there is!
Hasn't skipped a beat so far, but a problematic fuel pump may be the answer!

It was fueled up ~2 weeks prior to this happening.
