  • need some dualcab & multivan info

    Gidday,

After some good sensible info on both above mentioned vehicles please.

We have a 06 Golf 1.9td comfortline brought new and it runs perfect with 90,000kms on it and I am going to update in a few months my trusty old 93' Toyota daulcab (always late in my 2. Hilux workute which I have had for 15 years (267,000km).

I would love a dualcab transporter 2.5 auto, it needs a 2400mm tray with decent ladder racks for being a signwriter I carry 2400mm long signpanels & have 5000mm long aluminium tressels & planks and I don't do many kms per year with the odd return trip to melbounre (250kms) once or twice a month, kids sports on weekends is a must hence the duabcab and also the rear seat would be handy to lay vinyl cut graphics on when on route to a job......
The wife likes the Multivans, great & more comfort for the family on weekends, would be OK for work but a bit restrictive eg. Roof racks, paint and thinner fumes, carrying signpanels, general wear a tear basically, although I am an extremely clean and fussy tradie and my old hilux ute does look 18 years old, it is spotless, I'm just not to sure about the Multivan.......

Now for some questions and bare in mind that I do not carry much weight on vehicles it is all ladders with the odd short towing of a cherrypicker from the hire yard.

I would be looking for a very good secondhand one or maybe even new at this stage but I would like one all decked out to suit my job..
    • How good is the 1.9tdi in the dualcab & also the auto compared to our Golf?
    • Would you only consider the 2.5 in the dualcab??
    • Auto or 6 speedbox? (I'm getting older & lazy & fancy the auto really but towing)
    • How easy to remove the seating from the Multivan & how quick?
    • Strong roof racks on the Multivan Yes/No??
    • Would the Multivan rear door go up and hit a ladder on the racks??

Some days I can travel a good few stop start trips all about 3kms each within our town, not a good thing for these modern little deisels?? or is more oil changes needed??

Any info would be get, I

I have an '07 dualcab with the 1.9. I worried for a long time after ordering it that I should have got the bigger motor, worried that the 1.9 would be too small. I lived 300k from Adelaide and was doing 1000k or more every week, all high speed highway.
All I can say is bloody brilliant. Got the biggest Gitsham tray that I could fit on it and I have had some decent loads on it. Never loaded it to max but it will handle a load much easier than either my landrover or express utes. Towed my car trailer to Adelaide with the landrover on the back. Easily sat on 100 to 110 all the way, that was it though, nothing left in reserve. Was also carrying my m/bike and a spare landy engine in the back.
Plenty of room inside for 5 adults, room between the seats for a small fridge, good storage under back seat, comfortable enough for very long hours of travel. Now live in Adelaide and it's my daily driver. Gear box is manual but super light and no effort in city traffic. Got it set up as mobile workshop. Due to changing circumstances I will have to sell it in the next few months. Will be very sorry to see it go. If you are like me, you will wonder why the hell you kept your Hilux for so long. My ute replaced an L200 express ute that I bought new in 1981 and an ex army 1976 landrover. I was like the proverbial pig in ****.

The 1.9TDi would be a rarity on the 2nd hand market, especially in a DOKA. But as bxb said...it'll work just fine. Especially with the manual g/box.

The 1.9TDi had similar figures as the 2.5TDi that came before it in the T4 (like mine)....and my T4 DOKA goes more than well enough with it. If you can find a 1.9TDi DOKA then it'd OK but I don't reckon you will turn one up easily

Would not recommend the auto box.....too many scary stories.

The commercial versions of Rhino and Rola racks sit quite high...so the Multivan doors "shouldn't" ding your ladders. They'll take as much load as the roof...about 150kg per bar.

The rear seat in the DOKA (mine anyway) has been pointed out by quite a few (mostly taller) people as 'too upright'. Otherwise comfortable and roomy but too upright. Having tried it myself for a period.....I could only agree. It needs more lower lumber. So the Multivan rear seating may be more comfortable as your children get older. That said.....it is possible to replace the back seat in a DOKA with two front seats.

In your trade.......I would recommend the DOKA over a Multivan. If you have to get a van to appease the missus then I'd look more towards the trade orientated Kombi versions that were available rather than the full of fruit Multi

Just coming up on 75000. Will be due for a service and needs glow plug on number one changed.
Before I bought this one, I test drove a T4 dual with a tight tipper body. It was in good condition but the T5 was just so much better.
Mine is white, I've posted a pic somewhere on this site before.
Windows are tinted, has tow bar, alloy 16" wheels, weather shields, chrome handles and grill, 600mm truck air horn under bumper,13 litre air tank under tray, 10 liter water tank and 60 psi water pump, redarc dual battery system, 2000 watt inverter, reversing camera, large toolboxes, high level LED brake and turn etc... also has a large dent in the drivers side passenger door, you can see why I'm not too keen on selling it just yet but situation is changing and soon it will no longer be needed.

Gets between 8.8 and 11 liters / 100 depending how I drive it.

They are rare, but the T5 was so much better than the T4 that I ordered one and had to wait about three months. That could be down to our local dealers here in Adelaide. Somehow it took them over two weeks to get a master cylinder from Singapore. I could have flown over there, got the part, had a nice long weekend shopping, refit part myself and still would have had change compared to the work I lost in those two weeks. Master cylinder failed under warranty.

            I have a Multivan Highline.
For your situation I would not recommend one for carrying around paint and ladders. It's quite high. I have a set of Rhino racks on, and I have had difficulty at times with 1) getting the ladder up on to the rack, and 2) hitting the ladder with the rear door. With the racks on I have to be careful where I park in the city. I need at least 2.05 metres clearance in the car park, and some parks just don't have that.
Apart from that I love the beast - so you can't have it
