  • LED Trailer Lights

I had a genuine VW trailer hitch fitted to my new MY11 Comfortline. I did this so there would not be any problems later about compatibilities etc. I was mortified to see in the handbook a warning not to connect LED lit trailers as damage to the electronics may occur. I have spoken to an auto electrician who has had a bit of experience with trailer lights on Veedubs. He said that he doesn't think that any damage to the vehicle is likely, that the problem is simply that if the lights don't draw enough current, the system will think that the globe is blown and shut off current to that light.
As I tow several different trailers due to my involvement with historic motorcycles, I am thinking to make up a small in-line adaptor with ballast resistors to emulate normal filament globes. Anyone had any experience here or any suggestions?
    Many thanks

    Intresting,

Been pulling a trailer with LED lights with my 2005 transporter for nearly 3 years without issue. I don't get any errors or warnings (check with VCDS every couple of months).

Intrested to hear if someone has had problems.

Most decent quality LED trailer lights already have the ballast resistors or (better still) an encapsulated LED driver circuit so that the vehicle ECU 'sees' what it expects to see in terms of current draw.
