  • 1998 T4 stalls in neutral but otherwise sound

    Hi everyone,

I've owned my 98 T4 for about 10 years. Recently I hadn't been working with it as much and so it unfortunately sat idle for a month. When driving it again I found firstly the battery was drained and no longer charging correctly, no surprise there and the battery was due for replacement, so I replaced that but found that the van continued to stall when in neutral, no matter how warmed up or how far it had been driven.

I've driven it from Sydney to Canberra and back and it drove well, even so upon hitting the traffic again in Sydney it would stall out at the lights again and again.

Much like Alex in his stalling van thread I'd like to research more before paying for a session with a diagnostic tool as I'm concerned the van could turn into a money pit.

One theory had been that the fuel left in the van for a month may have been cheap and "decomposed", perhaps damaging something in the engine. Having done some research on this fine forum now I'm speculating it may be the crankshaft position sensor.

To me it seems as if the van is just detuned to the point where it cannot idle properly at all. I'm wondering if there is a way I can adjust the tuning myself, as I once did with my first ancient VW 1600. Any other thoughts on this would be great.

    thanks

Hi shifting, first thing occured to me reading your post is how has fuel consumption been since getting it going again.
    Same, more, less?

I would say maybe a little more, but not radically different.

2.0 according to the side of the van or 1968.0 according to the paperwork.
