  • Multivan T5 door lever broken....?

    Hi there,

Wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for prying the interior panel off the drivers side door? Please?

The door lever is broken (have to wind down the window to unlock the drivers side door) and seems to have unhooked itself from the cable. Just wanted to have a look at what was going on to see if it's fixable.....

    Cheers!

I'm not sure if you can remove the door trim from the inside with the doors shut.
The dealers, crash repairers and the locksmiths could have more ideas how to open it.
Also consider take it to the dealer rather than damage the door trim DIY, it can be cheaper. (but get the quote first, just in case that they would need to brake the door trim anyway)

I have had this part replace twice under warranty, I know that the door card is a large plastic part and were it breaks is a very small section.

Next time it breaks i am going to get the new part reinforced.

Can help you on pulling it a part but know how frustrated you must be.

If I understand the OP, you can still open the door but need to use the outside handle?

The UK Brickyard forum has a detailed step by step procedure for removing the trim. The only "tricky" bit is the flimsy cover on the interior door pull. Be very careful taking it off as it is easy to snap...

Maybe I wasn't clear...I can get the door open. I wondered if anyone had any tips for getting the door trim off to see what was happening with the lever? Cheers!

Naah, you were clear, I didn't read it correctly.

ive seen a broken one of these and their really isnt a way to fix it, the area that breaks is plastic welded to the whole door card, it wasnt my car so i couldnt find a way that would last and work like standard other than replace the panel

Before it breaks again and i run out of warranty, I am thinking about bonding some plastic to either side of where the cable it clipped in, do you think that this would work ???

i tried to find a solution to fix it but it had me stumped, nothing i could find would hold the cable still when you pulled the lever

If you going to strengthen it, I suggest you use this glue Q Bond Repair Kit Small: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike it sets in seconds. Many years ago, I glued shattered sliding door handle at home - still good as new. It's great for radiator grills and almost all plastic around the cars.

                            Been there done that.....twice!

I broke mine, pulled it all apart gently to discover the crappy design. Glued the clip back on that holds the cable and it worked fine for a few months. Glue was a special u-beaut plastic stuff but just did not last and it broke again.

The door has three layers (maybe even more). They are trim, then metal panel then the external door skin. In between the metal panel and the door is the window.

I undid one of those bolts that holds the metal panel in place and used a heavy duty mounted head ziptie to hold the cable in place. Unfortunately it took me about 5 attempts to get the cable in the exact position so the mechanism would work. 5mm +/- and either direction and the metal hook was either to loose or to tight.

                            ( 5-inch Mounted Head Cable Ties, 40 lb. Nylon Ties - CableTiesPlus.com )

I also had to grind down the bolt mount on the cable tie itself as the bolts are relatively short and would not get started.

To remove the door trim, you need to carefully prise up the switches and unplug the cables. Then undo all the bolts around the lower section of the door.

Then grab the piece that the switches were mounted to where it curves up to meet the dash and firmly lift it vertically and pull it off. Then undo the bolts that hold the handle in place. Then pull the trim out from the bottom of the door and then upwards....it should come off but be careful as there are to more wires attached and they need to be unplugged before the panel can be completely removed.

Hopefully that worked and you can see how little room there is to try to fix the problem.

If you don't have any luck I could probably pull mine off again and take pictures to show it all.
