T5 Tyres 17" what is available in OZ

I have been reading this thread with interest. After bad experiences travelling North in 2013 on the original Dunlop Sport. First one went at 15,500km, changed at Katherine, second at 16,000, back to Katherine, third went in the Pilbara and changed at Tom Price. Not much choice out there and I was told these were the only tyres available for this vehicle. 2012 VW T5 Transporter campervan. Had to wait for week for tyre to be sent from Nsw. The second time I bought 2 of them. Glad I did when the third one went.
I tried everything to minimise the stone punctures. Deflating, inflating at every change of road surface. Crawling along at snail pace when on the gravel. Very frustrating.
I have been somewhat put off and hesitant to go off bitumen now. I am considering the Hankooks. Are they available in SA, I am in southern districts. Are they the best for me and my vehicle and my dirt road travelling?

Did you also get 100000 km on the RA23?

Not yet. Only had them on for 20,000km so far.

Was that recently and where? I'm due for the tyres very soon.

After some work colleagues were get getting well over 100,000km from their Hankooks, on VW T5's, I decided to try them too. I paid $195 each fitted for the RA23 tyres.

I had the Nankangs on my van also, but I felt the mileage I got out of them was not good enough. $38,000km.
I paid $120 per tyre for those.

Ive recently put on my second lot of NanKang tyres. I got them for about $150 each and i tend to get 38-42k Km (about a years worth of driving for me). they're quiet enough on the road and I've never had any of those second thoughts about them in the wet.

I'm just reluctant to spend $300 per tyre on Hankook or Michelin (which I'd prefer frankly) when I'm not going to get any more km from them anyway.

Yes good luck with the old ones had the same problem when we fitted new alloys to our van , tried like hell to offload them and ended up selling them to a mate with a T5 who's tyres were due for renewal then dumped his old ones at the tip . Just no market for them it seems .

If you would be happy with stock tyres then here is a tip for any tightarse T5 owners who are anywhere near a company that does camper conversions. Give them a call and ask if they have any stock wheels/tyres lying around that they want to sell. I picked up 4 brand new wheels and tyres from a 2014 t5 for less than $500. Not any option for everyone but someone else might get lucky. Now I just have the problem of getting rid of the old tyres and wheels that I took off.

The roads around where I live are quite rough and I do a little bit of gravel road driving as well.

There are also new Michelin tyres for under $300 ea. on which I'll check the tread wear rating before I buy the next set in a few months time, otherwise I'm back to Hankook tyres.

Thanks Transporter. I didn't know about the Hankooks, will check them out. I did rotate them, but not every 5k. Do you drive much on gravel roads? Thanks

Hi guys, I have followed this whole thread. I have a VW Multivan 4 motion - 2012. I have done two sets of tyres and only clocked up 55000 km. I live on a property and travel on 20km of gravel everytime I drive to town, which can be a lot! The last set were the Maxxis, which just just were shredded by the rocks. I am thinking that the Yokohama might be the best bet for my driving situation but just wanted to check in case anyone else has found a better tyre more suited to the off road conditions. It is so frustrating!! Thanks guys for all of your posts, you are always a fountain of information!

Just check the tread wear rating on the Yokohamas. They would be my last option.
I currently have the GoodYear Cargo light truck tyres on my 4Motion and just done 30,000km on them, they could last you a bit longer, since I didn't rotate them until 20k km and I see another 10k km in them. But be warned they're very noisy when driven on road. I certainly wouldn't recommend them, but they may do well in harsh conditions.

Did you try Hankook RA23? I had them previously and got 40,000km out of them.

Did you rotate the tyres every 5,000km ?

I see there is a new Yokohama tyre in the 235/60/17 (Note- higher profile - makes speedo perfect!!)
I've been running the Geolander HTS HT in this size which has been good for off-road / handling.
For delivery van or loaded van then this might be useful:
