It's 17" tyres thread and I'm not sure if there is an 18" tyre options thread, but it's quite possible there is. Just use the search function or look at the older pages. If you don't find it, you can start one.

Just to add to what else is there in right load rating and size.

Just realised that they're the same as from the Tire Rack as posted by brad.Last edited by Transporter; 21-05-2012, 09:29 PM.

The speed woud be 7% fater and you would have to correct it somehow to be legal. Trakka modified vans aren't just bigger tyres slapped on.

yeah I'm keen to find out, as I'd like to fit Pirelli ATR 235/65 -17in tyres to my van when I get it...I did notice that whilst trakka use these tires on one of the ORP vehicles, they state its a manual trans without a DSG option...
does anyone have any concrete knowledge either from VW or otherwise that this would not be allowed...?

Would the 235/60/17" have an adverse effect on the DSG 4motion gearbox??

Its hard to get a straight word from insurance companies on whether its legal or not....
Generally they dont like tyres that are much wider and lower profile.
As long as the weight rating is ok, and the tyres are not more that one "step" away from the recommended then it should be fine...
Would be worth contacting your insurer and checking I suppose...
I cant remember whether I did or not...
PS - makes the speedo more accurate (if anything actual speed 0.5-1.0 km/hr lower than read-out)

It will not change the gear ratio. The gear ratio would changed, if you would've replaced the diff with the different one, with the different number of teeth in gear and pinion. The speedo will be more or less accurate with the different size of tyres, it depends...Originally posted by REVHE4D View PostIt will change the gearing ratio, and also put the Speedo out as well.

The 132 Kw has big brakes so only a 17" rim fits. The DSG means that a larger rolling circumference will void warantee so we are stuck with the 235/55/17 profile. Placard lists 215/60/17 for "winter" tyres. The limiting issue is the 103 load rating. This allows a total vehicle weight of 3.5 Tonnes which is needed for a fully loaded T5 4Motion and knocks out most of the locally available tyres.

Great thread, helped immensely with narrowing down 17 inch tyre options.
I ended up going with the Maxxis at $225 each. Prices vary widely between different retailers. One shop who only sold the amazingly expensive Michelins and some other expensive options directed me towards the retailer who import Maxxis and then to one specific outlet who did end up being the best price wise.
My original Michelins lasted nearly 50,000km before an unrepairable but luckly slow leaking puncture finished one off. I think I could have got another 10,000km or probably more out of them otherwise.
Having a 4motion I thought it best to replace all 4 at the same time and keep the best 2 Michelins under the house just in case I’m lucky enough to get another puncture later down the track.

On my second set of Maxxis MA P1
First set lasted 70,000 ks, this set so far have done 38,000 ks and look like lasting the same as the first lot
They are a road tyre though, so off road may not be what you are after
Quiet, sticky as crap, wear well, $215 each fitted, I'm happy

Between the same make and model of tyre, I doubt there would be much difference, if any. Compared to North America, Australia by itself is a small market, which also makes it unlikely we'd get unique compounds or construction, unless it was for the entire Pacific region or something.Originally posted by Transporter View PostThanks for explanation.
I had more on mind the rubber composition for the same tyre.
Is there actually that much difference in the rubber for all season tyre between tyre for US and AU?
Should have qualified my statements by saying my observations were mainly based on passenger car tyres.Originally posted by bobf View PostThe cargo Vectors certainly tick all the boxes for me - I note that they are listed as both a M+S and All Season tyre so I guess a case of one size fits all ! Most 4WD AT tyres in Oz , including BFG and Coopers are M+S rating and seem to do OK on outback roads
Which begs the question why I'm posting in this thread at all...

have only done 12000km so far but no noticeable wear - at same km the Michelin Primacy's were half down. I wil be disappointed if I don't get 45-50000 km out of them but only time will tell - Camper weighs in at 2800 kg GVM so tyres are under a fair bit of pressure.

How many kms have you done and how many do you think you could get in total out of them? I'm considering them now as well as Maxxis.Originally posted by bobf View PostThe cargo Vectors certainly tick all the boxes for me - I note that they are listed as both a M+S and All Season tyre so I guess a case of one size fits all ! I find the Cargo Vectors noisy at low speed but find them no noisier than the Cooper ATRs on my Ford Territory at road speed, however I drive a pop-top campervan that probably has the harmonics of a brick outhouse anyway.
As for handling I find them good and not spongy as has been suggested - put them to the test recently when at 110k/h had to take severe evasive action to miss an oncoming driver that had fallen asleep - hung on like the proverbial and got me out of a tight situation with ease. On outback roads I like the re-assurance of the c (LT) construction, 109 load rating, good gripping tread pattern and 60 profile. If I was doing bitumen roads all the time then these features would be of less interest. My experience anyway.
