  • Trans Cooler for 6 speed auto

Im looking to tow a jet ski over summer, and wondering if the gearbox has a tranny cooler come standard or if i should get one. i know most tranny problems are caused by the trans getting too hot.

has anyone had a trans cooler installed? if so prices and any complications?

    Cheers

    Motoxer,

If you look in the Bye bye T5 thread you will see lots of answers from people who say it is no problem to fit an oil cooler to the T5 6 speed auto and lots of suggestions that it is essential. However, from your two posts asking this specific question, it seems that no one is actually prepared to give a proper answer or else no one has actually fitted an oil cooler.

I just got my car back with a new transmission at 96000km due to the oil being cooked, probably from towing an 1800kg caravan for summer holidays and not much more. VW paid for the transmission and I paid for the labour, which at least is a very fair response from VW for a car that is 2 months out of warranty. It seems that they do need addtional cooling when towing but I won't be trying to fit one unless there is a consensus on how to do it and what to fit etc. This thread is a good opportunity for people to supply this information.

In the mean time, I will only tow with my 1992 Chev V8 diesel powered Ford Maverick (Patrol), which uses 50% more fuel and is nowhere near as good at towing as the VW. However, it doesn't break down either and it is over 450,000km old!!

I've just made an enquiry with A & B Automotive Remanufacturing P/L Home
and asked if they supply coolers etc. They took my vin number and will contact me with details and pricing which I'll refer back here. They supply many dealers with reco boxes (they supplied my dealer with my replacement box) and thought I ask them seeing as they repair transmissions and would have first hand knowledge of the pitfalls/positives.

The other thing to do straight away, MotoXer, is to replace all of the transmission oil. This may just save the transmission if it has still got the original oil but it also seems to cause problems for some people. My Multivan will have its oil changed at 30,000km intervals from now on.

$57/lt for genuine oil Takes 6lts+
Filter and gasket is over $200

Still....cheaper then a reco or new box!

It will be good to hear what the guys at A&B have to say.

Well there is Penrite SIN ATF as well and looking at the reliability of the box with VW genuine oil I don't see it as to much of the risk to use it. At $52/4L you could change it every year.

I went to the Fuchs distributor and they looked it up on their system and it basically said see dealer for genuine oil.

                Is the spec oil required? G 055 025 A2 ATF ?

Yes, Penrite SIN ATF is right fluid to use in T5 6speed auto fro that specs. I just double checked it with Penrite Technical.

Just make sure the fluid is replaced properly and transmission is sealed after work, otherwise you will get the problems.

What is the correct way to replace it?

VW dealer told me 3-4lts will drain out but need to run the engine to pump another few liters out. But, to get all oil out of the converter as well then the gear box needs removal.

I thought there would be a pump system that could be connected to the drain hole and the ATF could be sucked out.

I had a new filter and 4 lts of Penrite SIN ATF added to the box last week. Oil that came out was black and the magnets in the bottom of the sump were covered in fine metal particles.

I plan on doing it once a year. Hopefully it helps.

I don't think running the engine to pump all oil out is a good idea.$$$
I used Penrite DX-VI in '08 as it was recommended by Penrite tech at the time.

That's what Mitsubishi factory workshop manual says when changing ATF in V6 Magna.

so, you are saying we could run the box to drain all the fluid ??

No, here is how is done on Mitsubishi V6 Magna

I'm sure that VW factory manual says just drain and refill.

Just make sure you seal the filling plug well and always use a new O-ring.
