  • Whats my T5 worth?

Thinking of selling my T5 and buying a newer one after getting some advice from the accountant.

Its an 05 Comfortline with 136k kms on it. I have been looking on a few sites trying to determine what I could sell it for. Not after top dollar but after a fare price. I was thinking somewhere in the $27-31k range.

    Thoughts?

It's too hard to value without pics. How would you rate the paint and interior condition? Service history etc.
with the earlier drop in price and then again with the new drive away price the 2nd hand market hasn't dropped and I've been watching the same Multivans just sitting there for weeks.

Advertise $31,000 ono on carsales.com and market will tell you. I think that you could sell for at least $25k privately. Also look for how much it sells at the dealers.

What have they offered as a trade in?

Just thought we could all do with a laugh....

When i asked about chopping in our T4 CAravelle they offered me $6000.

When i sold it privately it went for more than double!!

220% above trade-in, ... Can I ask what you were buying....and what did the dealer say when you told them what you actually got?

2009 runout Caravelle, they don't really care, I'm sure that they only offered that so they didn't end up with it or if they did they could then fire sale it & get their money back fast which kills the used market value. I have NO respect for any dealers after my dealings with the Preston Bayford Group. Used car dealers are no different to what they were back in the 70s.

I would think it fair if a dealer offered me between $3000 to $4000 below a private sale price on a very good condition vehicle. I know they can only offer a "wholesale trade price" when that's all they are going to get from one of their used car dealer associates if they won't be keeping the traded vehicle in their own 2nd hand lot, but at your level...heck no.

I have not even bothered with the dealers on a trade in price. My father inlaw just bought a new 200 series Sahara for $110k, he had a 91 model 80 series Shara to trade that he had from new. They offered him $8k trade on the new 200, he sold it for $29k private.

All of the above demonstrates why I'm still driving the 2001 build T4 I bought new back in early 2002.....

To replace it with a similar spec new one.....I'd have to pay more than what I coughed up eight years ago. Even after the trade-in.

2002 buy price = ~$45K drive away (with air & cruise)
2010 trade in value = ~$8K (if I was very very lucky)
2010 buy price (T5 dual cab 4Motion) = ~$57K drive away (assuming no options)

All for a vehicle that does very little better in the real world than what the my current one does. Even trying to get more on a private sale won't help me.

I'd be financially better off in the long run simply mechanically restoring the thing every ten to fifteen years or so....only ten to 15 grand at a time - as opposed to fifty grand!

Looks like the T4 will be the last new car I ever buy.....perhaps even the last car full stop.

I guess it's all relative to our own individual situations. In my case my 100% work van T4 was nearing 300,000km and cost me $3000 in repairs in 3 months. Add to that the hire costs of vehicles while it was off the road, the big problem of not deliverying goods to farms when expected which can be a big problem when dealing with animal farming/housing etc, Finally my accountant suggested I'd spent more on repairs then what a new T5 would have cost. I'll be definately looking to sell my T5 privately first before accepting a trade-in valuation next time I update.

I have to add the T5 has worked harder then the T4, as in heavier towing loads and more gravel road driving so keeping the T4 would have been even more wear & tear on an already well worn vehicle.

$37,000 for 8 years is cheap motoring.
I didnt pay much more for my 09 demo Caravelle than you did for your T4 in 2002, so you dont have to pay $57k to get that replacemet vehicle.

No....I'd probably have to pay around $50K. As a private buyer, that's just too much for me these days. If I was in business then it'd be different....but as an average consumer...my new car days are over. Just the way it is.

Besides, there aren't many deals to be had on a 4motion dual cab because they simply aren't stocked in any real quantity.....if you prefer a front wheel drive DSG dual cab, no worries as there's quite a few in stock......but it seems they are still $55K driveway.

I went there initially, but ended up buying at Burwin VW where the sales team was MUCH more professional!
