Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cruise control switch failure.

Any-one had a cruise control fail. Mine just stopped working the other day. Took it to the nearest dealer, and they say the switch in the steering wheel stalk has failed. Fortunately, happened 2 days before the end of the factory warranty, even though they couldn't look at it till after that, so it'll be covered. (I do have the extended warranty as well. This reinforces that purchase nicely.) 2 day wait for a new one from Sydney though, as they reckon it's an uncommon replacement.
You really miss it after you've been used to it.

I took my Golf V in for checking a few years ago because there seemed to be a heat buildup in that section. They said nothing was wrong, but they could not explain to me why the control would heat up. Must say, though, it did not fail while I had the vehicle.

MK4 Golfs tend to crap the indicator and wiper stalks.

They're pretty much the same setup as the T5 and MK5 Golf. The contacts become corroded over time, (can cause high resistance - heat) and in some cases, the contacts lose tension, causing them to intermittantly remain closed-circuit (things stay on).

        Hi Brian
I suspect some kind of cruise malfunction. What were your symptoms/fault which led you to the CC ?

If they are going to replace it (about £75 for part in UK) thats cool, but if out of warranty i'd get a vagcom and try resetting it first.

            Hi Martin,

The CC just stopped working out of the blue. Driving along normally I just pressed the button, but there was no response. Tried all sorts of combinations of turning on and off, but nothing worked, although, I think it came back on briefly at one stage. Anyway, all fixed now. Cheers to Bayford Preston (not my regular service centre, but the closest in a hurry), who replaced the stalk under warranty without question, even though it was technically out of warranty by the time they were able to book it in (although it still had 2 days left when I reported it). They said the contacts in the stalk had gone, and it happens, but only rarely, but may be a result of dirt build up on the contacts. Makes me wonder about my dusty trip to Cape Yorke a couple of years ago.

            Brian
