Does my Multivan have a particulate filter?

Sorry, this is probably a dumb question, but I can't seem to figure out if my Multivan has a diesel particulate filter or not (I'd like to find out so I know which oil to use)

It's a late 2006 model, 2.5l TDI auto with one of the AXE motors. The handbook makes mention of both cases, with and without, but doesn't say how to tell which you have.

Yes it does. You should see the yellow symbol on the dash when you turn the ignition "ON" (look in the owners manual, to identify it exactly). And also you don't see any black smoke from the exhaust on heavy acceleration, except when the system regenerates.

My MV is mid 06 TDI with an AXE engine and isn't with a DPF and uses 506.01 oil. There is a photograph of a DPF in a thread on this forum of the muffler behind the engine pipe with wires connected to it.

Mine doesn't have any wires connected to the muffler and two mechanics and dealer have advised it doesn't have a DPF.

I've had a look in the handbook and found what the DPF warning light looks like, but I'm unable to see anything that looks like amongst the other lights when the van is turned on. On the other hand, the van appears to be very clean running; I've not seen a hint of black smoke.

Now I have an idea of what to look for, I'll have a crawl underneath and see what's there.

No, you don't have to crawl under the van, just poke you finger in the tail pipe if it comes out black you don't have the DPF.



The clean finger touched inside the tail pipe of our Touareg with the DPF (done 32,000km+), the dirty one is out of our Golf5 TDI without the DPF done only 24,000km. (anyway it would be that black even after first 200km)

Thanks. Yep, inside of exhaust is reasonably sooty. I've also had another look at the dash lights an I'm certain now there's no DPF warning light, so no particulate filter for me then.

And that also restrict your choice of engine oil. VW506.01 from VW dealer only. I was able to get Fuchs VW506.01 oil from Motortraders 2 years ago. They don't stock it anymore, and Penrite HPR5 Diesel 5W40 is not VW approved. I’m using ELF Solaris 5W30 (VW505.01 it is approved for my T5 made in 8/2004) with LiquiMoly MOS2 additive as the cleaning oil after water pump failure.
