  • Where's that pesky lighter fuse?

    G'day all

Took delivery of my new T5 2.5l TDI a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying the ride! Thanks to Kev with his Investment Allowance, my locksmithing business was able to upgrade from an ageing T4.

Read all the diesel "running-in", "Warming up" threads and the like - some great info & discussion.

Must say I'm a bit peeved with the level of info in the owner's handbook tho' - accidentally blew a fuse in the cig lighter while retrieving components from my GPS power plug which decided to come apart in it - and do you think I can just look up the fuse and replace it? Naaaaaah - that'd be too easy

So, if anyone knows which fuse it is I'd be grateful - it'd save a lot of pulling (and accidentally disconnecting radio then having to get code etc)

Great forum guys - lots of top info and good discussion.

    Cheers

    Hi Hop & welcome,

I had a similar thing happen last time I was going through Sydney. I can't answer your question because I dropped in to a local dealer (can't remember the name, but after the M7 & before the Newcastle freeway), and the service manager gave me a fuse and fitted it free!! (A small thing, but nice service, compared to all the bagging they get). Anyway, it was in the fuse panel hidden below the gear-shift (which I didn't even know was there), and I think there was a fuse list on the back of the removable panel.

4wheels is right about the fuse location and the booklet.

I blew mine (cheap light with a faulty plug), and after a bit of puzzling over the (several) fuse diagrams in the booklet I managed to find the cigarette lighter fuse and replaced it. Can't remember which one it was (sorry), but I replaced it with one of those new fuses that illuminates a tiny LED to identify which fuse is blown, so hopefully next time I won't even need to look it up.

        Hi Hop,
Good to see you got a T5
I blew the fuse for the interior light and what do you know my luck was in that day. first fuse i tried was the one.
How hard is it for VW to put a frigging index??

          Cig Lighter Fuse located!

Yeah - it'd be nice to have a listing.

Just rang the local dealer's service manager and he said that the fuse location could vary because there is a different configuration with each variety of T5.

But he was happy to use my VIN No to look it up and get back to me - in fact he just did while I was typing this!

For anyone interested who may have a standard T5 2.5l TDI, cig lighter fuse is at Top Panel, fuse #12, 15A

          Thanks to all.

          Cheers

AFAIK there should be a small booklet listing the location of fuses located on the back of the cover for the fuse box near the gear lever. Mine (late 2006 build) certainly has one there, and I've read of other people having one. Maybe they have stopped supplying it for later build T5s (bloody accountants and their penny-pinching build omissions !)

Have a close look for yours to see if it is where I said (the booklet I'm referring to is VERY small and tucked into the cover quite well). If yours is missing I'd ask your dealer for it to be supplied under warranty.

Let us know if yours definitely hasn't got one and someone (me ?) might be able to photocopy theirs and snail mail it to you (even if yours is somewhat different it would still be better than nothing). Or if you want an accurate listing (probably a better idea) get your dealer to screen dump the page/s off their computer system that displays fuse locations

I 'd say yours is built early if its a 2206 build.

Sorry, did I forget to mention mine is actually a prototype T18 mule, shipped back in time in a T5 disguise for some long term durability testing ? VW told me that they have finally solved the problems they had with DPFs, DMFs, DSGs and leaky sliding windows that plagued Transporter owners for the last 195 years.

Had a very good look Greg - nope, no listing. Cover is solid - no pockets or anywhere to attach a booklet. I haven't checked the engine fuse box tho' - might be something in there.
Only thing additional apart from fuses is a set of plastic tweezers to grab the fuses with.
Maybe with all the variants it just became too hard - or someone on the assembly line has a part time business on eBay
                  Cheers

Wonder if the USS Enterprise had the same problems....then again Kirk would get Scotty to fix it.

I've got an 06 T5 1.9TDI and it has three individual cards on the inside of the fuse holder lid. It's a bit confusing at first but you soon work it out. The other cards are for the other fuse boxes.. one in the engine bay and I have no clue where the other one is.

I blew the fuse in mine just the other day, I had a camp fridge hooked up to it and the fuse blew sometime during the trip. Now when I replace the fuse it blows instantly, which is a bit of a worry. I've pulled the lighter socket apart and all the wiring seems intact, no signs of overheating or scorch marks. I guess I'd better go and see an auto sparky to have it looked at further.

                      Cheers,

                      Sherwy.

If that is with nothing plugged in to the socket I'd look a bit more closely at the inside of it to look for a piece of metal shorting across (happened to me once), or maybe something earthing out the positive side on the outside of the plug.

Too Funny! I had exactly the same problem (sat nav and all). Yes the little cards that were in the fuse box were about as helpful as a smack in the head.

IIRC it was a 15amp fuse in the top row, I think 3rd from the right (first 15amp in that row right to left).
