  • Turbo probs with my T5

Hi Guys, was hoping someone could recommend an independent VW mechanic/workshop in Perth to inspect/replace the turbo on my 2006 T5 1.9TDI Crewvan. I'm in the Belmont area if that helps.
Engine revs quite freely in neutral/no load, moves okay in gear just above idle but won't accelerate under load in gear also can hear a whistle/whooshing sound at the same time under load. Van has 200,000kms.
Also if someone has previously had theirs replaced would appreciate what the $ cost was so I can budget for this repair. Thanks.

check the vacuum lines for splits (approx 6mm OD rubber hoses), as a start. The variable vanes in the turbo depend on vacuum to operate.
check the line going to the turbo actuator, and all others near the vacuum accumulator(roundish bulb thingy)
Theres an N75 valve that sometimes goes south on these
get a code reader on it, might give clues?
Gotta be cheaper than a new turbo?

Sticky/ stuck vanes can also be a problem. You can check for this, by pushing on the actuator lever with a long bar or screwdriver. It should move to a hard stop.

You can take the intake pipe or outlet, off the turbo, with a bit of work, to inspect.
My 2004 2.5TDI, also with 200K, has some slop in the turbo shaft, but still works ok. Maybe 0.5mm or so.
The 2.5's have a different turbo. Garrett VNT.
    1.9's i think are Borg-Warner
