  • Interesting that the Transporter T5 Van 132kW BiTDI was badged with TDI, not TDI; I wonder if that means VW has plans for a more powerful T5.1 TDI engine in the future ?

I didn't catch that your right

Most likely incorrectly put on by the factory

I've often wondered about that on my own van, it's badged TDI however every T5 Transporter I've ever seen as been TDI

PS I tried fiddling with the ashtray in the T5GP....initial reports are it doesn't rattle the way it does in a T5...yeah.....as you can see the "big" things excite me, however it took me 1/2 hour to find the source on a drive once in my van, lol.

IIRC TDI on a T5.0 (pre-FL) denotes the 99Kw 5 cyl TDI engine, while TDI is supposed to be the 128Kw version (or someone has been playing silly buggers with badges).

Around here the private vans are nearly all TDI, with the "work" vans a mix of TDI and TDI ( I think it depends on whether the driver owns the business or not). I have seen a couple of V6's, but they are pretty thin on the ground.

          • Some keen spotting.

Going off what they were saying at training the other week, there may be a more powerful engine in the pipeline.

Also worth noting, if you're over 6ft tall, don't buy a van with the factory-fitted partition behind the seats. It restricts the fore and aft adjustment of the front seats bit time. There is an optional cargo barrier that sits a bit further back, though.

Funny you say that as all the dealer vans (4) I've seen this week have had the solid partition fitted making it a bit restricted.

Re the more powerful engine, any rumours would be good. IMHO the Merc Vito V6 Tdi in a new VW T5GP DSG 4motion would be van heaven I would think.

              • No word on what sort of powerplant they may use.

They only hinted that the bigger brakes and provisions for a red T will offer something more, at some point down the track.

Yeah... I would be signing up for it right away, otherwise I can wait till they bring the T6, since the only visible changes are headlights and the grill. Until then, I'm happy with my T5's 128kW for now.

Went for a quick test drive in a 132 DSG SWB van today. Quite liked the DSG, and it was very quick and smooth (but I was comparing an empty van with my LWB 4Motion camper, which I expect is at least 500Kg heavier). The young salesman I spoke to said (with a nod and a wink; nothing official) that the silver T was significant and there's likely to be a more powerful version, but he thought it would be a stronger version of the 2L. Might make sense, because I hear it was only the shorter length of the 4 cyl. motor that allowed the DSG box to fit, and they'd probably still want to offer that on the most powerful version.

A V6 tdi would be even shorter then an I4....well you can only wish.

The two mono-turbo engines are identical, besides ECU software (No, you can't retro-fit ECUs. They're ordered VIN-specific.), so perhaps the same logic may apply to the 132kw bi-turbo engine, whereby a more powerful version of that will be available.

The DSG box, they tell me, is good for over 700Nm.

                          • Does anyone know if the Toureg V6 cr tdi (176kW,550Nm) could fit with dsg into a T5? This would give you similar power to the outgoing petrol V6 in the "old" T5 with great torque.

I don't like your chances, as it is fitted longitudinally in the Touareg (and all the Audis too), so it would probably be a fairly big re-engineering job. It may not fit at all, as it would be much bigger across the V than the inline 4cyl engine.

It would make a great engine for a T5 though, and if it had been available I would probably have bought one (following the credo "If much is good, more is better ! " )
