Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Have a t4 1993 2.0 ltr transporter that has a running problem. Since the purchase of my t4 there's been breakdown after breakdown , had vw mechanic fix it ,running good finally but ,then no start one morning . Replaced parts that were 'sus', fuel pump ,ecu, both water temp senders, fuel presure govn.[because old one leaked 100ml of petrol into ecu via map sensor tube ] ,relays etc. ,t.p.s. Switch ,coil pack . Starts beautifully runs at1200 revs then settles at 800 ,then stops. This happens over & over ,it can be revved but stops. Then after 20 -30 starts it idles like theres nothing wrong .while it does idle, being good it will just shut down. Then go back to starting & running for 5-8 seconds ,then the process starts over ,etc,etc.........

hey mate have you tried cleaning the idle stabilisation valve ? and how does your wiring loom look , old and crusty with hidden wires that might be broken, ive had that as a problem once and it took me ages to figure it out.

Hi, idle stab. Valve is operating good. You're right about the crusty wires, they were looking v. Aver. Had them tested seem ok .while motor was running for 15 minutes [when it decided to run ] the wire loom / harness was wriggled, pulled & idle was not affected in any way. Oxygen sensor on air filter inlet to man. Has'nt been replaced ....injectors might be faulty.

Do you have aftermarket immobilizer or was the van at the crash shop?
I posted a couple of information from my computer in this thread
you can have a look I don’t know what skills and tools do you have, but it might help. I could try to find ECU wiring diagram if you don’t have one.

There is a vacuum line from the ecu to the engine, take it off both ends and blow it through, they get full of oil.

Did you replace fuel filter? If fuel pump failed you should clean the tank as well.
Also check the fuel pressure and the fuel flow, if you didn't. You could have a bit of rust flake in the fuel pipe or fuel hose separating inside restricting the fuel flow intermittently.
