  • How low do you go?

How low do you run your tank in your T5 TDI? I usually fill up just as the needle gets to the red. How much further will it go before running dry?

It'll go another 300ks at least.

I'm not sure about 300km to go when it's in the red. How many litres do you get back into the tank as this will be your best guide? Eg. If you need 70Lt to fill it up (it's about 80L usable) and if averaging 10L/100km you then had another 100km distance to empty.

Let's just say lately I have been getting 81, 82, 85 (spoke to attandant about that one) litres into the 80L tank and have seen 0km range on the trip computer for a further 5 km before filling. When in the metro area, (and I'm feeling daring) generally when the fuel range distance gets to 10Km I try and find the nearest pump asap. Probably not the wisest thing to do.

on many an occasion I have put in about 83 litres in an 80 litre tank. running too low? Incorrect van specs? or dodgy petrol bowsers?

Distance to empty indicators are unreliable. I had an Falcon XR6 that ran out at 12km to go - 500m from the petrol station

I generally refill as soon as possible after going into the red. Better safe than sorry...

Most I have put in is 70lts to fill it up. So it sounds like I have another 10lts = approx 100km.

What happens if you run out of diesel and the car stops, just a matter of getting a jerry cans worth in and it will fire back up like a petrol car or is not that simple being a diesel.

I've had 0km to go showing on the trip computer for a few Km a couple of times when I've underestimated the distance to the next servo on a trip. Doesn't make for relaxing cruising. Have also put up to 83 litres in. Probably not the best thing to do.

Not as easy as when you run out of petrol. You will get the air in the fuel system and you need to bleed it out otherwise it will not start.
Ideally you should fill up fuel filter with the diesel first to get the air out of the fuel filter or you could try turning the engine over with the starter motor till it starts (no longer than 30s with 1 minute gaps between) risking that you flatten your battery and don't start at all.

                      how low?

I have put just over 85 litres into mine on a camp trip coming in from roma (where?) when i couldnt find a station, and the same on a trip from melbourne,

I have the MFA option and she was registering "0 please refuel" for a long time! as far as i know there electric fuel pump and i had 20 on board so dont think bleeding would be a dilema but thankfully didnt find out, normally you will get a slight warning when cornering thats its gona run out giving you enough time to top up or put the thumb out ")
