I use Shell Full Synthetic (Helix Ultra) in my T4 (since 25,000Km, now 135,000). Cheaper than Mobil 1 (alot).

In my Golf III 1.8 I'm trying Nulon full synthetic 10W40 I think.

The Shell is not really synthetic and the Mobil is. That's the price difference.

        From the Shell web page:

        The Shell Helix Range

        Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40

A fully synthetic motor oil that's ideal for diesel, LPG or gasoline engines, in modern prestige and sports cars, particularly those less than two years old, whose engines run faster and hotter in order to achieve ultimate performance.

Shell Helix Ultra delivers maximum engine clean up properties, with special cleansing agents, which actively and continuously locks away harmful dirt and deposits.

Shell Helix Ultra provides remarkable long-term oxidation stability giving your car’s engine extended protection from wear. It also minimises engine noise, and conditions and protects engines from the extra stresses of driving in modern traffic.

        Suitable for turbocharged unleaded engines.

Available in 1 litre and 5 litre.

So what do you know that Shell don't? Or are Shell leaving themselves open to class action?

              It's still a good oil.
Have you thought about a diesel speciality oil?

However, Shell is still a great oil, I noticed the differance when I put it in all those years ago, the motor had more urgency.

These oil & fuel threads always cause controversy.

I still think that it's wrong to call a mineral oil synthetic.

I suppose it's like fruit juice must contain 15% juice to be called fruit juice.

In the end I guess it all comes down to price. Is the quality difference between Shell and Mobil small enough to choose the cheaper?

                      I certainly think so.

Probably. In fact for typical day to day operating conditions.......more than likely. However, if you are routinely towing, carrying heavy loads or always pushing the engine to high revs (racing?!) then you might be better off with the more expensive oil. In the end it is all about profit. And who will profit most? You or the oil company.

My 2.5 TDi uses BP Vanellus C6 Global Plus 10W-40 diesel oil which is available in 20L drums for way cheaper than most consumer oil packs. The current drum cost me about $90. Cheap enough to swap every 5,000km rather than 15,000km but still rated as a long service oil if I get lazy

                          Valvoline Blue

I use Valvoline Blue diesel engine oil in all of our diesels (including 2 tractors that work very hard). It's a top oil and costs me $80 for 20L
When oil change time comes for the TDI it's out of my hands anyway.

Any recommendations specifically for tdi engines? I've been using the shell oil as it was what the previous owner was using, and I've been using it in other cars as well.

All of oil companies have experts that know a lot more than me and are quite happy to talk to you over the phone.

                              And it's free
