The same problem has happened again, three times in the last 3000k, roughly every 1000k. I found the CAT had disintegrated and if i gave it a kicking the car would run ok so i replaced it. Problem solved?...nuh I also made sure the petrol's clean.

The thing stopped completely today and wouldn't even start so i called the racv. Cranking the engine with the coil lead disconnected showed an intermittantly weak or nonexistant spark. The service guy said it wasn't the coil but the module(?) in the dizzy which tells the coil when to spark.

Does this sound right? Car gets trayed to VW Mornington in the morning. Does anyone know if this module(i think that's what he called it) can be replaced instead of a whole dizzy? I'm a bit worried about the $$$$

Thanks again for all the help and advice.
It would pay to get the igntion module checked out. But note the dizzy on the end of the engine is post the coil. So if there is not a decent spark at the coil, this will not be down to the Dissy. Yes the ignition module controls the coil spark ....if that makes sense.

It still would seem an intermittant fault. Get them to plug it into a fault code reader see if there any faults.

Yes a block CAT wouldn't have helped either! But will generally indicate that the engine feels a little strangled under load.

    Regards,

    Scott

      Thanks Scott,

They rang and said it was the Ignition module. $580 is still better than 850 for a new diz I guess. Fortunately the damn thing wouldn't start in the workshop so they were able to pin it down...unlike the last time when it ran perfectly for the 4 hours they had it so no faults came up.

      thanks again,

      Don

        Hi Don,

Glad they have isolated the fault. You might save a few bob by getting second hand replacement module from the wreckers. Try this mob.

Had the ignition (transformer) module replaced today and the t4 is running fine. $380 against $90 for an ebay one hurts but its done.

Although service at VW concurs with Scott. An intermitant fault may be something else like the windings in the dizzy. I'll just wait and see. Meanwhile I'll pick up a second hand distributor just in case...I aint payin' $850 for a new VW one no way.

            Keep you posted,

            Don

Don, Glad it's well on the way to being sorted. I suppose the windings in the Dissy is a possiblity also.

              Cheers,

              Scott
