CV Joint / Wheel Bearing Noise?

Hi all
My 02 T4 van developed a knocking noise today from the passenger side front wheel area today. At first i suspected a cv joint. The noise is intermitant and only occurs while driving straight on deacceleration, not in your typical worn cv joint manner while cornering. The noise is most evident at around 60 - 70klms, and is rotational and has a wooden sound, not metallic like a cv.

It gets progressively quieter as road speed decreases and is not evident at approx 20klms. I can also decrease the severity of the noise by throttle application, to the point of not being able to hear it.

I have had it on a hoist tonight with both wheels removed. The cv boots are all intact, there is no grease leaking from them.

While on the hoist i started my van an ran it up to 60 klms and on deacceleration the noise was most evident from the hub area. However, it does not sound like a typical grinding/whineing wheel bearing noise, and there does not appears to be any noticeable play anywhere.

Any suggestions before i start to pull it apart?? Thanks in advance.

IMO if a wheel brg goes it's always noisy, starting with a low drone at low speed & increasing in pitch as the speed increases. My guess is it's a CV joint.
Mine had wear in it without making any noise. Here's my write up.

Hi tradie,
I have had both front bearings done, under warranty luckily.
The noise was drone/rumble at about 60-70klm/h.
It was worse on left sweeps and better on right sweeps.
Left wheel was done first by warranty and helped and was cured by right wheel bearing replacement after further complaint.

Straight line would be inner cv perhaps, check the bolts are tight. This would certainly cause a knock

while your in there check both your balljoints and your rack ends on your steering for play. cheers brenton

Do T4s suffer from worn splines on the driveshafts like T5s do ? Most people don't notice these until they have stripped completely (and they have no drive), but anything is possible with stuff that is about to let go.

This is one of those whire, clunk, bang noises! The type that never appear when you want them to! I have checked out both the inner and outer cv bolts, the hub bolt and steering components, with no visible damage. All bolts are tight and there does not appear to be any excessive play anywhere. The noise was definately coming from the hub. However since first hearing and feeling the noise, it has not reappearred and the van is driving fine???!!!

The entire suspension components must be tightened to correct tension otherwise you get the odd noises here and there. Trying with the spanner or socket without torque wrench is not good enough, since the bolts and nuts on suspension are very tight. Did you use the torque wrench for checking?

Wheel bearings are also bad for going like 50 cent pieces on these vehicles.
