Thanks, yes I understand the plastic cover from the underside needs to be removed in order to access the sump plug however I mean the black plastic cover with a 32mm nut moulded into it which covers the oil cartridge filter.2008 LWB 128KW 4 Motion Transporter

Drive on the ramps or put the van on the stands on level surface.
You need 36mm short spanner or adjustable wrench. I cut out 36mm hex in the 50mm wide flat steel about 120mm long - it is better than adjustable spanner.
Before you unscrew the oil filter plastic top blow the area with the compressed air or use degreaser and water to wash around the oil filter area that reduces chance that the dirt will enter inside the engine. Let it dry if you use water - no problem when the engine is wormed up on warm day, about an hour and it's dry. I always drain the oil by removing the drain plug 19mm socket or ring spanner and than use the vacuum extractor to suck out the old oil from the oil filter housing area (not necessary). I use the tarp under the van and also put old rags or newspaper under the oil pan (while the oil filter is removed a lot of the oil drips from it on the frame and on the floor) I always use degreaser to washer the engine around the oil filter after a new filter is fitted and cap back on tightened to 25Nm (don’t over tighten it). Fill up with VW approved oil only (VW507.00) 7.4L needed. Buy it in the 5L packs it's cheaper.Last edited by Transporter; 01-04-2009, 09:44 AM.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Yep, they are a bugger to get at. Loosen it right off before you remove the sump plug. That way it will drain the oil from the filter cannister so as not to have a mess afterwards while you remove the filter.
I use a socket, universal joint and extensions and ratchet to loosen the cap off.

That’s why I made 36mm hex cutout in the piece of flat steel. You can make it from the 12mm plywood, if you don’t want to waste too much time making it from steel.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link
