  • Factory Boost setting

    Hi All

I haven't been on the forum for a while, but i am trying to determine the factory boost setting for my 02 tdi van. I understand that the boost is controlled by the ecu/n75 valve.
I have heard conflicting reports ( turbo capable of 18psi - not interested in this). My van runs at a consistent 3 - 5 psi with the occasional brief spike to 6psi.

Just trying to determine if this is the norm or if the std factory setting is higher?

    Thanks in advance

How is the engine going? If it drives normaly than you didn't measure the pressure correctly.
If you masured correctly there is something wrong. You don't need the turbocharger for that pressure - you can blow more just by sneezing onto the inlet.

The van drives fine for a fully laden work hack! ( still beats my mates Vito!) I have checked the boost with 2 different gauges and had the same result, both tee'd off the same point from the turbo.
Just a thought that the wastegate actuator rod may have been adjusted by a previous owner. Or even a weak spring or perforated diaphragm in the wastegate. Would just like to know the factory baseline figure and work from there.

What size is the engine or would you know the engine code?

              How did you measure it?
Was it at idle speed or while driving?
The best way how to do it is; by driving up the hill (the engine at 80 deg.C) in 3rd gear @ 3000 RPM no less. Otherwise you don't get the max. charge pressure.

I have had a boost gauge fitted for the past 4 months just to get a idea. Boost readings have been measured over a variety of driving situations, from light load to full load at varying speeds.

Well, this is not from the workshop manual for your engine, but it should be at least 13PSI - 15PSI measured under condition as above. Usually the T-piece is not the ideal connection.
How many km is done on engine?

also the line to the boost gauge can vary the amount shown , make it as short as possible and out of a hard plastic line , not rubber etc.
                    cheers brenton
