Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 5 Cyl Rear Muffler Removal

    Hi All,
In the past (with other cars), I've been able to remove the rear-most muffler without making them too loud. Mine has a hole and it needs to be replaced for rego. I guess I'm just being a tight-arse, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking I might gain some power and possibly make it sound better.
Perhpas this muffler is the one I need to keep, and it's the intermediate one that can be ditched.

As always, your experiences/thoughts are much appreciated.

...you may find you actually lose power (and chew more fuel)...has been known to happen when playing with exhaust systems on the cheap.

As for sounding better......c'mon....it's a plain old van not a rabid rice rocket.

If you really want to achieve both then I suggest actually throwing money at a decently designed and fabricated exhaust system from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe.

Gotta love the voice of reason. Thanks Seano. You're right, of course and I'm just going for the inexpensive repair. Perhaps some day I'll do the whole thing properly....probably not.
I had visions of my old 5cyl Audi. That thing used to growl through the exhaust with those 5 cyls pumping. But...it's a van.
