  • Kombi Beach does Tasmania

We have just returned from a four week trip from QLD to Port of Melbourne via the Newell Highway, then crossing on the Spirit of Tasmania then 16 days anticlockwise around Tasmania then return to Brisbane.

Here is a link to the photo album, showing the kombi in use in many camp grounds including coping with wet and cold weather.

The kombi did 6000km and ran like a dream, no drama no problems, it sure makes a very good touring car.

Nice one. Love the sunset shot (17).

Incidentally, how do you fasten that tarp to the edge of the roof?

I have a length of 1" aluminium square rod fixed on by the roofrack bolts, and on those are screwed 3 ute tonneau cover hooks that fit the three holes of a standard 6x8 foot tarp. Not the ultimate but it works.

I like that photo, its an amazing match of colouring.

Brian. Looks like a great trip. Those beaches are well set up. Good shots too.

Not sure, as we approached at first we though it was a bushfire in Victoria, but it was much too black for that. There was already a couple of fire trucks there so we did not stop, but it looked like a load of some sort of plastic was burning fiercly. The truck appears to be sitting right on the ground, I think because the tyres have exploded and the springs sagged. We also saw a rolled truck and a caravan that had rolled and disintergrated, on the way back.

                Nice pics there.

Out of interest, how much was it to take the van over on the Spirit? Thinking I might do that trip sometime in the near future.

As it comes in under 5mtrs and does not exceed any height restrictions, it is classed as a standard car. We had inside cabins for the night crossing which was about $430 per person return including the $65 for the car, but I don't know if the price is the same if you do the cheaper day crossing or have sit up chairs.

A variety of prices including different seasons are on the Spirit of Tasmania website for more details.

When I enquired earlier the day trip[daytime] were $94 each, one way. The problem is they finish on 14th April from memory. After that date you have to pay for a cabin or sleep in a chair[not good] I can't remember when the day trip starts again, but very late in the year. We have always had a cabin but I would like to do a day trip.
We have travelled to Tas. around 5 or 6 times, 3 of those on the ferry. The LWB that I had at the time was over 5 mtrs but they still charged the lowest rate. The last time I travelled the seas were 5.5 metres, not good for someone who gets seasick.
I love Tasmania, IMO best state for tourism in Aust. Great pics BTW.

Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Inside cabin would be less luxury than that kombi! - ask to sleep on car deck next time...

                        Yes, I love Tasmania also.
