Vw T5 20" Rims.

Hey all im new to the forum

Late last year invested in a T5 4 motion manual 128kw
Serious van i love it, it can embarass sportscars!

Anyway i want to put some 20" rims onto her. I have seen in uk and usa they are doin 22 and 24 so i thought 20" no problem and still useable.

Think again- every tyre place i ring is refusing to supply me anything and most of the wheels i look at are pretty close to weight specifications,
Iv even offered to take them away , eg they dont have to fit them making them not liable.

Today i had to tell a place they were for a BMW 330ci which has same Pcd and offset as T5 just so he would bother going through his catalogues to see what he can get in. waiting for a response next week.

Is anyone else having this problem getting rims?

As i said as long as they are fairly close to weight Rating they will do me as dont carry big loads, this is pretty much my everyday car with room for few tools or bicycle/matress.

Im looking for a quality german look similar to a BBS style ,
Budget is a max of 4-5 k


Have seen some T5s in Byron bay with 20s on crusing around but didnt manage to speak with the owners, they also were not big unsigtly heavy duty van ones so someone must be supplying them,

Can anyone help or recomend any styles?

i would also like to drop in 40mm is it possible to get springs in Australia or must they be ordered from over seas,

Hey twincamsham – I feel your pain!

I’ve been looking into new wheels for a while now but it’s like beating my head against a brick wall.

Tyres are the biggest headache – if you want to keep roughly the same o.d. as stock the only tyre available with the correct load rating in 20” is a 275/35. If you don’t mind a larger o.d. tyre then you have more choices but then legality may be a problem.

BMW X5 rep rims will fit but don’t have a high enough load rating (needs to be 850kg)

Range Rover sport fit – not sure on the load rating but should be ok.

Can you post a pic. of what style you like?

As for springs you could try H&R springs (just google search for the aussie importer) or ABT sportline (try Ramspeed).

20" Verde on T5

Hi TwinCamSham,

here is my van. Verde Kaos 20X8.5 750KG load rating on hankook 245/45R20 99W load rating(775kg) I got them for 3K wheels and tyres. Yes, they are not 102 tyres as required by the placard but 775kg X 4 = 3100kg which exceeds the van's payload by 100 kgs (25kg per tyre). I've had no problems for the last 12 months and sometimes I do carry alot of weight. I once picked up over a tonne of water samples, my rear mudflap was 1 cm off the ground but the wheels and tyres held up with no problems after travelling about 40kms with that weight at 90kph on the freeway. So I think if your not anticipating carrying anywhere near that amount you will be fine. I am also comprehensively insured with the RACV with these wheels and tyres. By the way the tyres lasted 50K kms. Im getting new tyres fitted next week. Hankook have released a higher performance(handling etc) version of the same tyre at $300 a piece. Competatively priced against the michelin commercial tyres that the van comes with. Although u give away about 30 thousand k's its the price you pay for style

I had alot of trouble finding lowered springs and people who will actually do the job over the last 12 months. Most of the overseas guys wont ship to australia and no one here does a spring whorth fitting. I recently purchased a set off these guys.

thanks Transporter, but there are 2 reasons i need to lower it apart from the handling and looks. When I put the 20's on, they raised the height of the van by almost an inch and a half. I get in and out of the van about 150 times a day and its made a big uncomfortable difference. you wouldn't think 1.5" wouldn't be noticeable but it sure is. The second reason is because its raised the roofline by 35mm meaning i cant get into low clearance carparks etc. So, i guess height and ease of entrance/exit and looks and handling outweigh the loss of some ride comfort.

By the way I should add, since putting the 20's on, my speedo has come back pretty much dead accurate. Before the 20's it was about 5km under at 100k's(as are most european cars from factory).

hey twincam, dont even bother with anything from CMC. He wanted 10 pounds per KG to ship the springs to australia. they weighed in at 15kg apparantly, so i got a refund. The search for springs in australia continues....

A guy I know here in Melbourne has 19' X5 rims on his T5 and it looks nuts. Don't think he is bothered by load ratings and trye placards if you know what I mean.
I have just bought a T5 with the standard 16's and am heading down the BIG wheel path. so I am reading here with much interest.
