I've had my van for 3 years, and decided to get a tow bar installed. The dealer did it, and it was about $1,600. They say that it has to be integrated with the van CanBus system.

Tow Bars (cheaper is not always better!)

I got quotes from the dealership ($1500 from Barlow World VD 5 Dock NSW)
$900 from a standard tow bar place
$800 from some old bloke in Canberra who turned out to work from his home (very shoddy!).
The $1500 option was for OEM quality, with warranty, and all issues sorted, removable hitch (what I wanted)
The $900 was for a fixed tow bar (had to undo 2 bolts to remove)
$800 option was for a industrial looking fixed bar with protection bars running the full length of the bumper (eye saw but functional for a working van)

I went with genuine VW from the dealership.
I had it fitted in Canberra from Canberra VW, as they were $100 cheaper than Barlow World.

If you want a removable hitch and full warranty, genuine is the way to go.

Best wishes from a very wet Nth QLD.

      Ken.

Try Muller and Muller for OEM bar (hitch receiver style) and VAG harness installed. A little over 1K from memory.

There was a forum member who had his tow bar supplied & installed by Coldys for under 1K.

The VAG dealerships vary wildly due to variations in the labour component. Barloworld 5D quote me a lot more than Barloworld Mascot...
