Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T3 Syncro 4WD Lock Kit

    Hey everyone,
Im not too sure what they are exactly called but today i fitted a T3 4WD locking kit that gets rid of the Viscous coupling (known for failing), It replaces the viscous coupling with with a long metal splined tube, then on the gearbox theres a mecahnical switch (hard to explain how it works) to switch it to 4wd or rear wheel drive. It switches with the same system used for the diff locks. Apparently volkswagen were going to use this system origionally but bailed out and chucked a viscous coupling in, you can see evidence in the mouldings of the back peice of the g'box (You replace it with a hole new rear peice with the locking mechanism in it). If you have a T3 syncro and your viscous coupling seizes up i recomend to get it instead of paying $1500 for a viscous coupling off volkswagen that will probably screw up in 5 years time again. The customer went over to germany and bought it back with him but im sure you can get it sent here somehow. Anyone else ever heard of this system?

    Hi MK2 Gti,

the device is called a decoupler, I've had one in my Syncro for about 1 1/2 years it was purchased as part of a group purchase a friend and I organised from Bernd Jaeger in Germany, cost about $2000.

I still have the old stiff VC installed, the system is fantastic it can be slected on the fly and in normal road use takes a huge amount of stress of the somewhat fragile and expensive gear box.
