T4 transporter V belts

Hi guys new to this please bear with me I have just bought a1996 t4 Originally from NSW (I bought it in Scotland) The problem is it has 277000 kms on the clock and I need three new belts (fan/V) I cannot read the numbers on the broken belt but the smaller two I can get replacements The largest belt seems to work the air con This is not needed in Edinburgh BUT will it do any harm to run on two belts also looking for a manual (to buy) any tips please. sorry it is a petrol engine )I forgot to mention that .

Belts are a bit of a bastard on the T4 as VW seemed to randomly allocate different belts whenever they saw fit. My local dealer won't do anything with respect to belts without the VIN and I've not had much joy with off the shelf belts either!!

It's unlikely that the aircon will be the only thing running off that one belt (of course stranger things have happened!) but in the event it is then you'll probably be fine.....just don't leave it too long or you risk seizing the air con from lack of use.

Manuals? Hunt down appropriate Brooklands manual http://store.brooklandsbooks.com/product998.html as it is probably the cheapest to buy and easiest to figure out of all the manuals on offer

I don't know about the '96 vans, but the later ones were fitted with after market A/C kit, presumeably because the OE option was too expensive.
This is the main reason why the dealer's parts manual cannot specify the correct belt. Take your sample belt to any industrial supply store & they should be able to identify & supply one.
As Seano has said don't leave it off even if the compressor is the only accessory driven by it, as lack of use will finish it off. I make a practice of running mine for a few minutes everytime I drive it to keep the oil splashing over the seal.
What petrol engine do you have, the 4 or 5cyl?

hey mate sounds like the aircon might be aftermarket. you can always do the old string trick and run a piece of string around the pulleys to find the length . dont forget that the old belt will have streched. cheers brenton

Thank you guys for giving me a bit of your time. Your help was/is appreciatted I will have to "do the old string trick " as it looks like VW will not help I will keep you all in touch with our little adventures. Colin

If you have an old belt just mark it up with a chalk line on the belt & bench roll it along like a hoop till the chalk mark on the belt hits the bench again mark that spot on the bench measure between the marks in MM s & tell your belt dealer you want one 20mm shorter .
worked on my old 2004 T4 2.5 EFI ,

Cheers david I solved the problem by taking the t4 to our local garage and after seven attempts he managed to get a belt and a spare one for the future thank you
