Recently on a trip to Victoria, I started having gear selection problems. I was still able to drive but on getting home it got to the point I couldn't select reverse. I have done a repair in the past, around 2018, & I thought I could manage this as I had made a special tool as shown in the sticky section for T4 on this Forum.
This time, I had a different fault in that the large ball had split & fallen down where I could retrieve it.
Unfortunately my tool worked perfectly for the replacement of the small ball cup but wouldn't for squeezing on the larger ball.
After trying on & off for a couple of days, having my son have a go & giving up, I called on my friend to see if he had any ideas.
Long story short, we modified my special tool to control the ball so that it was captive.
For me, this is probably the worst job I have ever done on my cars, absolutely frustrating. The ball, torch, tools kept falling through the maze & layers of components. I had constant bleeding from the backs of my hands. There is still blood remains on the top of the gearbox. I would give it a degree of difficulty of 11 out of 10.
In the end I needed to drain the coolant, remove the coolant reservoir, disconnect a coolant hose & wiring plug and the reversing switch, gearbox mount etc.
The main problem was I could only get one hand down where it was needed until I removed the coolant tank.
I had success in the end together with a very high level sense of achievement. The van now drives like a new one.
When I get around to it, I will edit my posting on the tool I modified shown in the T4 section.
