I will soon take delivery of my new Transporter and in the same week I need to make a trip from Melbourne to Sydney. I have read the "Sticky" on the ideal run in procedure. If I were to not use the cruise, vary my speed and say keep changing between 4th 5th and 6th would that achieve a good run in?

Floorshow........using cruise is fine and there's no need to vary gear selection. Just don't keep it sitting on the same revs for much longer than 10 minutes at a time. Vary your speed every 10 minutes or so. My run-in consisted of the trip from Sydney to Bourke...all I did was vary speeds between 95 and 115 throughout, every ten minutes or so. Tedious, yes. But effective...and that was six years ago.

I spoke with ours prior to picking up our 1.9 TDI Golf, and received some good advice (and don't forget that these are the people you have to deal with if anything goes wrong).

i have a polo, but its diesel, and it was ex demo. i took delivery of it at 4000kms on the clock, and followed that sticky RELIGIOUSLY.

the mechanic at the dealer reckons thats why my oil warning light didnt come on until 18,000km's (just what he said, im car-illiterate).

my running in consisted of 2-3 days a week going to mt buller ski resort (round trip = 600kms), and i did everything- rev it to 2500rpm when cold, when warm, rev it to 4000rpm, have periods of full throttle use over a few seconds, etc etc. my polo feels faster now that when i first got it (i guess it has loosened up nicely), and when im not being a little boy, i'll get 800km's out of a 45 liter tank quite comfortably, in city-only driving.

up side of having a diesel- thrashing the crap out of it and having fun, constitutes part of the running in process. enjoy!

My current vehicle is a TDI Caddy and the VW manual supplied with it really only says - "Up to 1000k, Do not drive faster than three quarters of top speed, Do not use full throttle, Avoid high engine speeds and do not tow. - 1000 to 1500k speeds can be gradually increased to the maximum road speed or engine speed (RPM)"

The VW advice in the manual contradicts the info in the sticky.

I'd be more inclined to follow the sticky.
