Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 15” tdi400 with zero oil usage, how can I keep it going this well?

My 15 model transporter (CFCA) Is about to tick over 100k, doesn’t use any oil and has be perfect to me. I’m the type who nips things in the bud before They go bang, ie oil and filter every 12k, so in saying that is there anything that’s not VW advised that I can tackle myself?
I’ve read about the DPF and EGV delete or clean that can avoid costly repairs later on, but I’m assuming that’s for engines that burn oil?
    Any tips appreciated.

A catch can would be a great idea to help keep carbon buildup on the intake manifold and intake valves down. Get a good quality catch can like the Flashlube or Provent. Probably a good idea to have the intake and EGR cleaned out beforehand though seeing you have 100k on the car. Places like Engine Carbon Clean NSW do this service (they are mobile) and offer several different levels of cleaning (ive had their basic stage 1 clean done on my V6 TDI about a year ago). Some places do a catch can kit (with bracket, hoses & fittings etc) to suit popular vehicles. Western Filters for example, although they tend to cater more so towards the Ute market (Amarok, Triton, Hilux etc). For me, I could not find anyone making a kit for the Audi SQ5, so made the brackets and hoses etc myself.

With 100k on the car, your EGR and intake manifold would most certainly have a thick coating on them, which reduces your performance (essentially strangling the engine slowly) and also reduces your economy. I cleaned mine out when the car had 35,000km and there was about 6-7mm of muck built up already.

I did my older T5 2.5 intake around 130K. Almost all the gunge was at or just after the EGR.
Probably wouldn't have bothered removing the intake if i'd known.

Besides cleaning the egr, does anyone do a delete kit for it? I’d ideally ditch that and the dpf altogether...

Look at Darkside Developments in the UK. They will more than likely offer a DPF block off and DPF delete kit, but you will also need to have the cars ECU remapped otherwise it will have a hissy fit.

Otherwise, go see Zadtec in Sydney (Artarmon). They are dealers for Celtic Tuning and do some really nice in-house exhaust fabrication so would be able to offer you a drive-in, drive-out solution.

Egr is mostly to blame for high oil consumption on CFCA engines
D suffix egr the only good egr

Had my oil burner replaced, dpf and egr deleted, more power and better economy, 200+ hp and at least another 100km per tank
I replace engine oil every six thousand kilometres and filter every 12 thousand
Roughly $1500 to remove egr and remap software

What oil filter setup did you move to after removing the original egr?
