    hi sendo
if you draw a blank with the head,i can send you a second hand one, ready to bolt on for say$450 +freight
i have a complete engine and gearbox in the shed, which i pulled from my 2010 bi turbo van with 181,000 kms
im not sure what to do with the engine and so let it sit for any spares i might need, but so far i havnt needed anything
engine is CFCA and was giving signs of bore degradation eg smoke on decel plus sitting at lights then taking off gave a puff of smoke

you can read the post here dated 25/9/2018 T5.11 to T6

Thanks Russ. Looking at 1800 aud labour $300 for gasket kit . I would rather put a new head on it. Looks like there has been some recent work on the motor 2017 egr cooler and 2016 turbo work.
It looks like I have sourced a new cfca bolt on head for $2500 delivered from the fatherland.
I might pull the trigger on that.

but you could always buy second hand, then reco the head...or not(got to be less than $2500)

always here if you need it

my guy wanted $350 just to pull the head(back when i didnt no wot was wrong with motor)i thought it might be valve stems....duh...wishful thinking

once repaired they are really good engines(imho)so worth it if you intend to keep, but you are still only fixing head....even low k engines can have bore degredation.....if you plan to sell and cut your losses, then throw a second hand head on and sell it

you wont know til you monitor oil loss,if your bores are stuffed
this is not a repairable situation....oversize pistons not available for CFCA and later oversized require diff conrods(ask me how i no)now its cheaper to buy a wreck and swap the engines over
of course your PO may have caught it(the EGR) in time

if it was me,i would fit a second hand head(i wouldnt fit a new head to a 2010 CFCA engine),then monitor the oil consumption
then sell it to some other poor bastard(i couldve done that but just didnt.the buck stopped with me)

good luck with it..i think you know how good it can be

I ordered a new CFCA head from Germany off eBay AUD 3100.00 ( used import agent ) .delivered to my door. Local VW specialist on the Gold Coast fitted it AUD 2750 to fit ( 1800 labour plus parts)So $5850 .00 . The van cost me $12000 on the road. So I’m in AUD 17850 for 2010 Highline multivan. We are going to use for weekender, set up as Campervan.
Drives beautifully now. Mechanic said there was no signs of wear on the cylinder walls. Just have to keep the services up .
I wanted to make sure no more overheating issues.

                Hi Sendo,
Mate I’m wondering how you ever got on with this overheating issue? I have the same engine and am currently having the exact issues you described. Been to the local VW dealer who were both useless and rude, then to a euro specialist who flushed the radiator which hasn’t helped.

                Any info would be great!!!

                  Hi Jbstars
I think we will both be screwed by VW. When I had the head replaced I was given the option of a new long motor fitted for $11 K. I ended up spending $6K on replacing the head with a new one I ordered from Germany ( 3k ) . This fixed the overheating issue, I have put on about 4000 klms since new head. But now I find out it is one of those oil users. I am using 1.9 Lts per 1000 Klms.
Which isn’t really worrying me ATM as I’m only using it on the week ends and every now and again for work.
If you were going to try getting the head changed , I would try to determine if you have an oil burner first, maybe oil test.
I have read in the forums that VW says it’s normal to burn oil in diesels, but my wife’s diesel golf burns no oil.
There was a guy in Vic who had a second hand head , but it cost me $2700 to change the head. So I decided to put a new one on .
Overall , as long as the engine keeps going and doesn’t get worse , it’s ok. I have a 2010 VW multivan highline, which
I have converted to camper van for less than 20k.
I got the head changed by Adam at VA garage at Southport on the Gold Coast.

I am having a similar overheating issue but the van drives fine with no indication of a problem unless I am fully loaded and going uphill at which point the oil temp climbs to about 118+ and the van starts to overheat and if left will over pressurise the coolant. Did you have any symptoms at tick over or fail a combustion test on the coolant? I just can't believe the van runs so well if there is a head issue.

The symptoms appeared earlier than yours.
It was after about 30 mins of driving . So your issue may still be the head , but not as bad a leak as mine.
I went down the path of getting the water pump and thermostat checked/ replaced.
Ended up taking it to a VW specialist ( not dealer) and they diagnosed it as head.
In hindsight I should have replaced the motor. Now the turbo has gone. And it is still an oil burner.
I would take it to a Vw specialist and get it properly diagnosed.
There is a chemical test to detect exhaust gasses in the radiator coolant. You may want to try one of these first .
                      They are available on eBay.
I have seen a few instances on YouTube where extensive fault finding and replacement of parts have been carried out, and in the end they do the co2 test and it is positive.

Think I will try the test. I am also fitting a Darkside Developments oil cooler which will reduce the operating oil temp to protect the engine a bit on the hot loaded up days, can't do any harm and is thermostatically controlled so no risk of overcooling the oil.
