Another Kombi Beach Question...

Hi,

Was wondering if Beach owners were sleeping directly on their beds or using another thiner mattress in between for wear and tear and comfort etc.??? And has anyone tried making up mozzie covers for the windows so you can leave them slightly open in summer?

I do not own a Beach but on my "old' Trakka which uses a VW R&R bed, the bed is very hard & also contoured for seating. We purchased a 45mm latex foam overlay which helps alot. It also depends on how old you are. The comfort level you desire is directly proportional to your age.

Hi we bought a double fitted wool underlay it fits great but we hav't tried it out yet, it is fairly thick so it should do the trick, thought about some screens too but havn't got there yet, still thinking

Ahhh, that explains my current custom made extra long 230mm thick innerspring mattress in my campervan ......

I seem to have some ancient memories of sleeping on the ground some 30 odd years ago (mind you, I don't think I enjoyed it much even then)

Hi Tapsy, where did you pick that wool underlay up from? Sounds like a good way to go and not to bulky when not in use....

If the seats in the Beach are as hard as the ones in our T4, then a woolen underlay will not help.

We bought an egg crate mattress....made no difference.

Finally bought 2 single foam mattresses from Clark Rubber, that did it, but we sometimes still wake during the night and in the morning with aching bones.

I use a thick sheet to serve as a liner to protect the seat covers and sleep inside a down sleeping bag.

As I am a graduate from the Chuck Norris school of camping (hard pack dirt for firm back support with the occasional pebble to aid circulation), the Beach bed is relative luxury...

For mozzie window covers there are several options commercially available. Reimo (Germany) make magnetic covers as do TopGear2Go (Australia). Both are a bit pricey but the magnetic strip attachment (as per the standard Beach privacy covers) is a great idea.

got the wool underlay from Harris Scarfe on 'special' for $140 they were originally $340 also got a fitted mattress protector under that to keep the spills away then we have a woolen quilt. it's all there but will still hav'nt slept in the van yet we have set it up to see if it works and originally had a protector not fitted type with straps and we changed that for a fitted one and it wraps around the whole seat and back platform area snugly.

Thanks to everyone for their info and input. I got hold of a Queen size fitted wool underlay today from Big W for $119.00 and it fits very well. Now just need to get out and give it a try...

This may sound strange but yesterday I bought a double and it didn't fit so today I swapped i for the queen and it's a perfect fit, goes from the front edge of the rear bench seat to the back of the other mattress thingo (will have to post a pic or two)... Go figure!

Beach bed

Hi

We have just completed a three week journey into central queensland sleeping in the beach every night. We use a cheap two inch thick cotton covered mattress that we got from BCF.

We also have fabricated two mossy nets out of the small mesh window shades that stick on with suction cups, that you can get from Supercheap. One end can use the suction cup on the glass, and the open end we fitted magnetic clips that you can get from newsagents to stick to the door. When the window is open the thin frame of the mesh fits in the groove for the glass.

What an awesome van, we had no trouble passing three trailer road trains in safety.

It's a Qld Bullbar one fitted by Westbar Vanquip in Perth.

BrianJ - that's a good idea on the mozzie screen, I think I have a couple of those knocking about somewhere so will give it a try at the weekend.
