Fuel odour issue

Hey people,

Pick up my 2012 Caddy SWB 160TSI today and loving it already! Getting some Golf GTI Denver wheels on Saturday from Stump so then it will look much more spiffy. It's been about 10 years since I've owned a VW (although had a Beetle for my first car).

Only thing I noticed is when I stop at lights I get a strong fuel odour in the cabin? Anyone else experienced this? Could it just be fuel lines damaged? I must admit I didn't notice it when I test drove it but I'm pretty sure it had a lot less fuel in the tank....

When I am stopped at the lights with my Caddy Life TDI, I will put the ventilation system on recirculate because it will get a bit of diesel exhaust smell in the cabin. I believe this is because the exhaust pipe ends underneath the rear bumper so the exhaust gets caught underneath the body of the vehicle when it is stationary and get dragged into the intake for the ventilation system. It could be the same issue for your TSI but if it definitely fuel odour as opposed to exhaust odour then it might be worthwhile getting that checked because you might have a problem somewhere in the fuel/exhaust system.

The intake for the aircon will be at the front The bits at the rear are to let it out and have flaps to close when not being used

As said if its a petrol smell get it checked before its a big red flash and a smell of smoke and burning

You should not need to do this manually as the van will do it automatically. It's a standard feature on Caddys for the reason you have mentioned.

Saying that quite often the auto recirculation flap mechanism can fail. On my van when I stop at the lights I can hear the flap trying to constantly engage. If I hit the button and do it manually it engages with no issues.


As for the OP's fuel smell it could just be the tank was slightly overfilled and is venting fumes. I.e. only fill until the first click of the pump at the servo.

Thanks Horace, I learn something new everyday

We have owned our Caddy Life TDI since new, I did not know that it had an auto recirc mechanism and I do not think the auto recirc mechanism has ever worked (although my wife has been the main driver until recently). Unfortunately it is out of warranty but I will get my mechanic to check it at the next service.

I've had the seller have a look as he is a mechanic. He said maybe it's from around the turbo unit as I had a pre-purchase inspection
done and maybe they removed it to check it?

I think it might be exhaust odour not fuel. As stated, if I put the AC on recirculate there are no issues but i'd still like to get it checked to see if there is an issue.
