  • Towing a car trailer with a Caddy

    Hey guys,

I'm starting to think about getting a caddy and I haven't been able to find much info/stories about people towing cars behind their Caddy. As there seems to be a hundred and one combos of engines, trannies, bodies and suspension out there, can anyone give me some advice as to what to aim for, or avoid?

We're thinking about either a swb or lwb (maxi) with the DSG - so that makes it a 1.9TDi by default I think?

Towing would be cars around the 1200kg area, very occasionally but probably for long distances like 2 to 8 hours. I have an Aurion which could do it but would rather the Caddy so I could chuck panels and seats etc in the back at the same time.

    Many thanks!

I think you'll find that a car trailer plus its load will excede the towing capacity of the Caddy.

You'd be better off with a SWB Transporter.

Thanks guys. I just take the carsales info as a ballpark figure, they're often not applicable to all variations etc... For example some adverts rate the towing max as 1500kg with some articles talking about optional springs that increase the capacity. Maybe 1500 is with the optional spring?

I come from from a mainly volvo background where it's common practice to ignore the official towing capacity as it's been proven multiple times over that some models can easily tow the same model on a trailer. I was hoping that was the same with the Caddy but to be fair, it is based on a golf so I am likely overreaching here

You may have issues claiming insurance or warranty if you strike trouble while exceeding the towing capacity.

Thanks Umai, the spec sheets I've been able to find show a max of 1500kg on some models so yep, I'll leave car towing out. Thanks.
