Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Problem with Reverse Sensor - Please help!

    Hi,
We have just fitted aftermarket reverse sensors to our Caddy Life. They are rear sensors only and do not connect to anything else, just the normal type that beep when getting close to something.

The sensors worked perfectly when testing before installing. They also work perfectly with just the ignition on, and this is where it gets interesting. When the car is actually turned on they beep on and off like there is something behind the car but there isn't it. Have checked the direction of the sensors etc etc...alll good. Turn the car off and just turn the ignition onto "on" and they are perfect. Turn the car fully on and bingo...beeping again.

It is a Caddy Life 2011. One install place that I called for advice told me I needed a reverse sensor interface at a cost of $200??? This doesn't see right?

What am I missing here? Any help would be most appreciated.

Did you use the reverse light for the power?

The vehicles CANBUS will pulse the reverse light to check for a faulty bulb. You may need to find another power source.

We tried a reverse lamp/beeper in our 2012 Maxi Life for the kids safety, but the beeper was erractic / intermittant when the car was running. Any other time it was all good.

They're powered up off the reverse light signal.

The onboard power supply doesn't send a voltage to the globe unless the reverse switch on the gearbox is activated.

It appears the wrong wire has been tapped into.

I connected the wire from the reverse sensor box to the reverse light wire. When the cars ignition is switched to the "on" position (car not actually running, just the key turned to the "on" position) and reverse is selected the unit works perfectly. Beeps when someone walks behind the car etc. When the car is actually started (motor running) and then reverse selected it continuously beeps even if nothing is behind the car.

          Is there 'calibration' loop wire?

problem with connecting to reverse light is that the supply voltage is not 12v when the car is turned on. had the same problem fitting a reverse camera, ignition on, camera works fine. start the car and it stops working. you need to run a new supply and stick a relay so its activated via reverse light.
