Why No Temp Gauge in Caddy TDI Manual?

Hi All

It's the question that has plagued me since my purchase of the Caddy Van... Why is there no (water) temp gauge!?!?

When I was at my local VW dealership the other day, the Caddy Life, DSI Caddy Van & the Caddy Maxi all have temp gauges... It would appear that only the manual Caddy Van has missed out Even the sales people thought it was odd, but of course they couldn't give me an answer as to why this was the case.

I'm guessing that it was just a cost cutting measure, but seeing as I'm new to the TDI scene, there could be some other underlaying reasons... ?

I thin k you're right it's cost cutting... I beleive it's optional on the Caddy vans

Every single manual Caddy Van they had on the lot (Which was a fair few mind you) didn't have a temp gauge

The dealer didn't even mention it was an option, & VW doesn't list it as an option either

I would've thought if they were going to cut costs, that the tacho would've been the first thing to go...?

you're not missing out on much though, that gauge never does anything other than stay at 90C

Perhaps write a letter (email) to VW Aust. with you VIN and ask whether there should be one ?

IIRC VW even has a software "fudge factor" built in so that as long as it is somewhere near 90C it will read exactly 90C (supposedly so all us paranoid VW owners don't panic if it goes from 89.5C to 91.23C as we go up a big hill )

It does show just how long it takes a TDI to warm up if it is driven gently on a very cold (Canberra winter) morning - sometimes it takes mine over 15 minutes for mine to get to 90C.

You're not wrong, although not that cold here in Melb. yet I can get half way to work and it still hasn't hit 45deg. The old petrol/lpg T4 would be hot at the same point.

Might have to see what VW Aus has to say for themselves... I thought it was sort of silly not having a temp gauge. I mean, no tacho I could understand (Although I think the tacho is very useful)... But no temp gauage, well, how do you know if you car is getting hot!? Sure there's a light that comes on, but that could be too late!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one surprised about this lack of gear.

From the looks of things, the MY08 & MY09 models have had the temp gauge removed as a cost saving thing.

If I'm not mistaken, then pre MY08 models were only available in manual & were about 28k... Once the DSG models came out, they took over that original price point & the manuals dropped down to 26k.

Still not happy about it & I'll be sure to let VW Aus know... I really really want a temp gauge

Reminds me of the stage where Inchcape distributed VW in Oz and they deleted rear wipers on the rear wings doors of T4's ( but not the tailgate version)...only problem was as I drove to the dealers to order my replacement which had them as standard from '97 it was a very wet freeway drive to the car yard where they proved invaluable and made me notice none of the yard displays had them....found out I would have to diy to fit them through spare parts, wreckers, auto elecs, switch gear wiring... etc..as it wasn't even an option at nearly $2000...needless to say in the time I worked out what to do, I changed my mind, time went by and then the T5 came out.
