2001 16v cutting out

cutting out when putting into neutral, changing down a gear or turning on a/c?

easy,
vw tell me airflow sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced +- $1000 (happened a year ago so vague on price)

i remove airbox and clean throttle body with carby clean .
froblem fixed for the whole bank breaking price of $5.
