6N2 Polo - Advice on service needs, service manual, and fault reading requested

Good Morning,

New to this forum, and in fact VWs. I have recently purchased, but yet to pick up, a 5spd manual, 4 dr 2000 Polo (6n2), cheap at auction.
I need to refurbish it prior to giving it to my mother. The intent is to:

• New oils, filters, coolant, brake pads, belts, and possibly tyres.
• Check Fault codes and remediate if required.

I have a couple of questions:

Is there a good, value for money fault code reading solution available?
Is there an electronic copy of the service manual available.
On a 13yr old car with only 69000km, is there anything else I need to worry about or check?

Depending on what part of Melbourne you are in, I have a vag-com that will be able to pull out all the codes that you are looking for. Just out of interest, which auction did you get the car from?

Picked it up.....god awful noise from the gearbox. Engine sounds sweet. Drives....but not sure how far I would want to go with that noise.
Are the gearboxes a known issue with these things? Are they a simple teardown, or is there a place in Melbourne that does exchange?

Gearboxes are a known weak link in the 6N Polos.

You'd be better off sending it to be rebuilt. Used ones can be a bit of an unkown.

Fair enough. That being the case, I am soliciting information on know places in Australia, in particular Melbourne, that will do either:
a. a gearbox rebuild
b. provide an exchange gearbox for the AHW engine.

Struggling to find either, and the quotes I have got for rebuild vary from $1000 - $4000!

Dont want a second hand box that hasnt been fully remanufactured/rebuilt.

When I purchased ours [gearbox is good] I enquired from the local VW wrecker when I was buying a few parts, on the price for a s/h gearbox. At that time it was around $1600. Since then I have seen a company in Sydney who were advertising drive in, drive out, full recond for, from memory, around $1200.
Just to add to what has already been said is that on these gearboxes, the selector rod seal wears & lets oil out. If you don't keep an eye out for oil leaks then the gearbox can run low on oil & ruin the gearbox. Mine had a leak when I bought it & found by the slight bruising & rough surface on the rod that the seal had been changed before.[another example of rough workmanship] By careful sanding/polishing I have been successful in stopping the leak.

In regards to this selector rod seal, would it cause difficulties in selecting first gear? Or is there an adjustment in the selector rod mechanism can make?

Fault finding a '98 model, and it seems 3rd is closer to where first should be, and 1st is engage by pushing hard left (almost reverse territory!) and difficult to get in.
Once in, the gearbox shifts beautiful with no issue.

A worn seal will not cause problems in gear selection. There is adjustment in the linkage. VW have a special jig but can be done without it.
I had to disconnect mine when I installed a new clutch & was able to reinstall correctly by just taking a photo. You may need someone to help by sitting in the car [jack stands in place] & moving the gearlever to your instructions. Fairly easy to do really.

There's also a bushing that can wear, causing difficult gear selection.

It's another one of those things I've been meaning to get around to doing on mine, before I sell it off.

I too have adjusted many a 6n1 (your 98 model), its easier as a 2 person operation and just adjust the linkage that way. Also check the nylon bush/cup in the ball that is part of the linkage too, they can crack and come away which won't help the adjustment either
