Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2001 Polo cold start issues

On cold start there is a strong smell of fuel, the idle is choppy and sometimes the idle will hunt before the car stalls. It will restart without trouble.

When the car has warmed up there is no petrol smell, and the idle is normal, no issues at all.

Does this car have a cold start injector? It is an AHW engine.

No cold start injector. Ahw is twin cam. 16 v which has 4 injectors. You may have a bad coolant temp sensor. It normally gives bad hot start but some can read big negative figures and it drowns itself . The hunt may be it clearing after that. Also might have a problem with throttle body , might not be setting for cold start and fast idle which might be choking it.

Thanks Jmac. I've ordered a new temp sensor to see how that goes. With the problem seemingly a cold start issue only, it should be right to drive while I wait for the sensor.
